Two things come to mind. First it could be not getting enough fuel when hot due to carb adjustment being too lean. That could be that the float level in the carb is set too low or the low speed jet is set too lean. When cold the choke circuit in the carb supplies the extra fuel required.
Second in some enjines that have low compression they start cold but when hot the compression drops below 60 psi and makes starting very difficult until engine cools down.
I suspect a fuel problem.

I have an 18 HP B&S 42" Craftsman with the same problem. Carb has been rebuilt and fuel filter replaced. Have cleaned the vent hole in the fuel tank cap. Nothing has helped. Choking the throttle will keep it running for a few more seconds but it eventually stalls out only to start again in 5-10 minutes which keeps me thinking its a fuel, not electrical problem. Maybe overheating but how can you tell if its causing vaper lock?? Submitted by Redroadster.

Clean the carburetor. The needle and float are stuck closed, passage blocked or a jet plugged with debris. Give it a good cleaning.
