My Viking Designer 1 seems to be falling apart. First the touch screen stopped working. I took the machine into my dealer for general servicing and to investigate this problem. The screen was replaced (about $100) as well as the buttons (about $20). The labor fees were covered by the $100 cleaning and checkup cost. Something was wrong with the screen installation, so back it went. About six weeks later I can only get the machine to stitch backwards. I go to show hubby the problem and demonstrate several stitches. This time I hit the stretch stitch and it starts to stitch forward again. Problem solved for a few days of sewing, though the fix stitch only worked some of the time and the backstitch none of the time. Then it starts to stitch forward in only tiny stitches no matter the stitch length setting, The latest word from the dealer's repair person is that she thinks, but isn't sure, that it's the feed dog motor (about $200), and the board behind the buttons will also need replaced ($30). I'm wondering if I should be trusting this repair person. She didn't say it was covered by warranty, but shouldn't the motor for feed dogs be covered by a 20 year mechanical warranty? Any other thoughts?

It's a shame, but you are discovering why many of us are returning to the old mechanical machines circa 1965 or earlier. The fact is these newer computerized machines have issues far more often than one would think.

If I were you I would call the support line for your machine. Ask directly if your machine has been recalled. And whether or not your motor (never heard of a feed dog motor) or board(s) are covered under the warranty. Ask them to confirm that via email.

Good luck.

SOURCE: Viking sewing machine model 6430 will only sew backwards

Th cam stack gears have gummed up on you you can try getting the back cover off along with the side and soaking the machine down with wd-40 and running it while forcing the reverse button in and out if it breaks free try and soak up as much of the wd-40 as you can and then oil anything that moves. I know this may be discouraging but viking no longer supports this machine and you might be better off taking it to an older viking dealer for help.

How to open fixed screen? on Designer 1

I would check the Touch Screen first. Your Owner's Manual tells you how to calibrate the touch screen from the SET menu. However if the touch screen isn't working, you can't get to the SET menu. Suggest taking it to an authorized Viking Dealer and they would be able to quickly determine the solution. You can find the nearest dealer by going to the Viking website - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us website and click on 'Locate a Dealer'.

My husqvarna designer 1 keypad doesnt work

It could be the Touch Screen. If it is a Designer 1. If it is a Designer II or Quilt Designer or #1 it could be the Dcard. Recommend it be checked by an Authorized Viking Dealer. My Designer 1 sewing machine touch screen is frozen and won't calibrate or respond to touching. This is intermittent behavior. Sometimes it works, and sometimes not. Can you tell me what this is

Sounds to me like the plug-in connector from the screen is not firmly attached to the motherboard (directly behind the screen but inside the machine). This kind of problem doesn't take a factory trained technician. Ask various sewing machine dealers to whom they subcontract cleaning and adjustment. Ask people who sew whether they have the name of a repair person. Taking apart the machine and replugging the connection should be all of a 15 minute job.

Viking designer 1 screen crack can't use touch screen sensor not working due to crack. can it be repair and how much would it cause me.

The touch screen can be replaced. The part is a little under $200 and the labor cost will vary with the repair facility that you use.

See an authorized dealer.

Designer 1 touch screen freezes

You probably have the old-style touch panel which is known to fail. Viking has a five year warranty on electronics but sometimes they will cover this particular part beyond the five years. If you find a sympathetic dealer you may be able to get the part for free. You will need to pay for the labor though.

Good luck!
