When recording turn off things like antivirus as they hog massive amount of CPU time. Also turn off wireless links and any other background tasks that will cause audio overruns. Alsoverify you do NOT have inout echo turned on. This would cause feedback that might sound like reverberation.

A common problem with mics not working on a computer is that the settings for them in the sound section get clobbered back to defaults. Check the recording settings in the sounds and devices in the control panel section. Verify the named device is set to your mic and the mute is off.
