Too heavy a hose can cause this (after 20 minutes, there's just too much hose behind the sprinkler to drag any further).
If the unit shuts off entirely, the sprinkler could be hitting the top of the hose (wheels digging into soft soil) and tripping the auto shutoff under the unit. (Mine does this every once in a while).
