Camera will not read SD card

Every time i try to take a photo with my new G1 it pops up with a quick message saying please insert SD card to use camera. The SD card is in there. I have tried to take it out and pop it back in then try to use it, but it still pops up with the message. What should i do?

I cannot take any pictures... i get the same message all the time , plugged/unplugged from the PC :  please insert an sd carde before using the camera.

  • Anonymous Nov 21, 2008

I have the same problem, mine was never plugged into a pc when I received this message, however, it took pictures prior to an update that I accepted when the phone prompted for it. Could the update have been the cause of this problem?

  • Anonymous Nov 24, 2008

In Camera mode, SD card at times is not recognized although the SD is inserted and present. The phone must be reset (powered on and off) to get the camera to read it.

Is there a fix on the way for this?

  • MYSHKOWEC Nov 26, 2008

  • metg1 Dec 08, 2008

I have the same issue.  When I try to take a picture it says to insert SD card.  it works after i reseat the SD card.  But now photos are disappearing and somehow deleted off of the SD card.   I double checked card by putting it into card reader and all the files are missing from the last set of photos I took.  Help.  Do I just need a new card??  Note:  card is a 2GB sandisk

I have a 16gb sdhc card in my g1. It worked fine for taking pictures one day then the next it keeps coming up please insert sd card before using camera, i tried deleting the hidden thumbnail and it worked for one picture then immediatly said please insert sd. why????????????

  • keulspamacco Apr 07, 2009

I have had this problem before with the voicerecorder app creating a corrupt file, which made the sdcard become unreadable. The solution then was to hook my phone up to my pc and delete the file.

Now however, I think there is a similar problem, but when I hook up my phone, my pc only sees a few folders and not the ones I need to be at...

    Really confused here...

  • Anonymous Apr 08, 2009

Same problem...damn this sucks. No solution seems to work. I did the factory reset as well. For me the same 4 songs keep popping up even after multiple reformats and manual deletion! WTF!

  • Anonymous Apr 10, 2009

Error message please insert sd card before taking pictures. G1 knows there is an sd card there and knows how much space is available.

  • Anonymous Apr 13, 2009

same here.  If it is a comercial phone, sold by T-Mo, the SD card slot is disabled.  G! phones can't add memory.

  • lulubeastie Apr 18, 2009

im having the same problem, everytime i try to take a picture the stupid thing says please insert sd card before using the camera, none of the solutions seem to be working either -.-x it worked fine before but i dont know what happened... this is pissing me off >.>

  • jlblakey Apr 22, 2009

I have tried everything and cannot get the SD card to be readable. This is my THIRD G1 since November and I have had unrelated problems/faults with each one. I understand they are new and are still working out the kinks but this is crazy!

1.) Mount your camera
2.) Open your dcim folder in your camera
3.) In whatever file browser you're using (Explorer, Finder, Nautilus, etc) enable show hidden files.
4.) Remove .thumbnails folder
5.) Be sure to empty trash

See if that works.

Sometimes there is a corrupt file amongst your pictures that won't let the SD card load correctly. In my case it was a Picassa image file so what i did was I mounted the G1 to my laptops usb drive, found the corrupt file ( I know its corrupt because it will not load up as a regular thumbnail) right click on it, go to properties and only checkmark Hidden file. The file now will remain hidden and your sd card will load correctly. Also after having done this the laptop showed a message that the file was corrupt I clicked on it and the message dissapeared. Also something else that alot of people don't know is that you get a smoother connection if you format your Sd card. Before doing this Backup all your information. Go to sd card drive right click on it go to properties and uncheck Quick format and your format should be Fat 32 in the window then click Start and formatting begins. After this add your backed up info to the card and you will be surprised how much smoother it loads up. Hope this solves some problems.

I had this problem, and what i did was:
mount the phone through a USB to my laptop, open up the drive and first i deleted the thumbnails folder. Then i opened up each picture folder and deleted any files that wouldn't show a thumbnail as the icon in the folder. I then unmounted the phone, and ejected the SD card using the "unmount/eject sd card" button in the settings menu of the phone. Then i reinserted the SD card.
It now works fine, and it lets me take pictures again :)
There was no method to this i was just guessing at it, but it worked so it might help you guys too.

I just got my phone a couple days ago and I'm experiencing the same problem. Just fixed it! When you mount the phone to the computer, a temp internet file pops up. Delete it and you should be fine. If you soft reset, the file may return.

The problem is a Bad SDcard. When you replace your SDcard or remove your SDcard at anytime from the G1, make sure you go to Settings then to SDcard space and Unmount your SDcard first then you're able to remove the SDcard. I think the SDcard that comes with G1 is cheap and should be replaced upon reciept of the phone. This will fix your problems. Thanks MrG1Star.....

The SD Card Slot is NOT disabled by factory. My G1 is currently having problems reading the 8gb SDHC card but its not disabled. If your pc doesnt read it you might need the hotfix from microsoft as xp and lower can only read up to 4gb SDHC by default. Google this: (Update for Windows XP (KB934428). Once I get the G1 solved I'll repost

From the manual:

Installing SD Memory Card

Your camera has a memory card slot that enables you to insert any "SD" compatible memory card up to 8BG. Adding a memory card will allow you to increase the capacity of your camera before you have to transfer photos and videos to your PC. Install the SD memory card as below:

  1. Locate the Memory Card slot within the battery compartment.
  2. Insert the Memory card into the slot in the correct direction. (see the sketch below)
7
  1. Push the card in until you feel it "click" into position. The top of the card should be flushed with the surface of the camera. An icon will appear on the LCD screen after you turn on your camera.
  2. Once the external memory card is inserted into the camera all the images taken with the camera will be stored on the card.

Note:

  1. Limited internal memory is provided for test images. The image will be deleted when camera power is turned off. Please download the images before power off .SD memory card is required for normal use.
  2. An external memory card is required for normal use. Your camera supports any compatible SD memory card (up to 8GB).
  3. If there is a photo in the internal memory when you insert the card into your camera, a "Copy to card" message will appear on the LCD with Yes or No options. On selecting 'Yes' the photo will now be copied to your card.
  4. Formatting will delete all data on the SD memory card including protected data.
8
  1. Don't remove the SD card during formatting as this may damage the card and render it unusable.
  2. When your card is full, download the media on the SD card to your PC and delete the photos and videos from it in order to continue using your

Keeps saying sd card removed when its clearly in!!

i recently bought a used g1 from a friend and tried to insert an sd card but it said the same thing sd card removed the card is fine then i did some researching and found out that the q1 has a sensor in the sd card cover which if it is opened it will say that message now my problem is that the cover is broken so i am currently working on a solution to that but if it is not broken then just try taking the sd card out turn off the phone and insert the sd card and properly close the cover make sure it is not opened even the slightest then turn your phone bak on and it should work unless the actual sd card reader is damaged or the sd card itself. hope this information was helpfull

MY G1 KEEP SAYING INSERT THE SD CARD AND I HAVE ONE IN THERE ALREADY.

Does the card "read" in a computer, or other phone? There the steps to try first, Also make sure its of a capacity the G1 supports, if the card does read in another device then your phone needs looking at, maybe try a freinds card in your phone? also if your card doesnt read in other devices, then your card looks like it is faulty.

2GB SD card is brand new but camera says it is full.

Some of the older cameras will not take the bigger cards. You can use the bigger card with your computer to store your photos.

G1 wont take pictures

I  had a similar problem, I fixed mine by formatting the SD Card in my computer, installing it into my G1, then restarting. You miss out on whatever was on the SD Card from Google, but at least you get to use the camera.

Hope this helps, Eric
P.S. I've called tech support to see if I can re-download whatever was on my SD Card to begin with, and as of yet there is nowhere they could direct me to, to download whichever files were stored there.

Unable to view pics

Copy the existing photos on to your PC, switch off the camera. Remove the SD card and format the SD-card using a SD-card reader, this will clear all the card contents. Now try using it in your Camera again. Ideally, you should be able to save photos on this SD card. Other way would be to insert another SD card into your camera and click photos and check whether those photos are being saved into the SD card(this can be done using display option in your digicam.)
