I have something shorting out under the car. what could be shorting under the engine and killing the engine

I have something shorting out under the car. when i move the wire harnesses that run under the engine the shorting stops for a while. it started just killing the engine at a slow turn or just before stopping. now it was making the car chug and jurk and the rpm guage to jump spiratically .when i moved the harnesses it stopped again. I have had to replace the feul pump the ICM the ECM and a mutlitude of other parts under the hood. when i took the car stereo out, the black wire on the harness and the connector were melted (the wire some but the connector massive)which i replaced.so i would assume something is shorting directly to the ground.the car runs like a dream and the guy before me put $800 in parts under the hood. I have just figured out that it stops after moving the wires but not sure which ones.

On my Chevy truck the rmp gauge jumps erratically at the same time the engine bangs out like hitting on 4 or 5 cylinders. The gauge will quit and fall to zero at the same time the engine smooths out.

Remove the wiring to the tach (tape it up/cap it off so there can be no shorts to something around it ) and see if the engine stops mis-firing. Sounds like a short in the tach that's killing your engine.

2003 Santa Fe starts and then the motor dies (3-4 seconds). Car was not driven for about 8 cold and wet days. Checked oil - is very low, added a quart that I had, no immediate improvement. Battery seems...

I don't think so. It is unlikely that the oil being low caused this condition. That will damage the engine and cause it to lock up but only after it overheats from no lubrication. Something else is killing your motor. A starter kill switch or faulty fuel pump, something along those lines. My best guess based on what is posted is something electrical. Check the ignition and run relays in the power distribution box under the hood for being wet or shorted. After so many wet days you'll want to check your spark plug wires and connections to the coil pack for moisture and if there is any dry them out.

Fuse behind glovebox 20amp always blows when car starts which kills the engine. What does it regulate someting is grounding out...what can it be?

Only one way to find out. Get a 30 amp fuse in there, get 3 or 4 more people to be spotters, open the hood, one under the dash, wait till dark, start the engine, somebody will see a spark, you just found your short. If it blows without anybody seeing anything, try it again, feel the wires at random and see if they got hot somewhere, open the trunk, check everything, have somebody under the car looking. I found this by accident one night, hope it helps.

Why is my truck's alternator gauge keeps fluctuating sometimes killing the engine

Perhaps the gauge is correct and you have a bad short that is taking all the power and killing the engine, have a good look or get it fixed

I have a 90 honda accord ex. something is killing my batttery

Your problem could be like a stereo being left on and it drains the battery, or you could just have a short in your system somewhere, so juice is constantly being sucked out of it.

3ltr will run OK then cut out (no warning) will start when cool.

This problem is caused by a faulty thrust switch which is located on top of the intake manifold where the throttle linkage is located. It is a safety feature which, in case of collision, will kill the engine. This switch can short with age, and in the case of my 1989 300e, would kill the engine on left turns and approaches to a stop light. You can purchase a replacement at autohausaz.com, the part is located under "electrical" category, and itemized as "switch". The proper name is "thrust switch". It costs about $29.00 dollars and takes about ten minutes to replace.
