Hi I have a craftsman mower I am working on with a cv14s kohler engine. The engine will not start and just backfires through both the carv and the muffler but mostly the carb. I have removed the head and did a complete valve job on it. I have lifted the flywheel and check the woodrif key and it appears to be ok. I have removed the white wire to the cit and tried to start it with no results. Is there anything I am missing. this has me baffled.

I am not sure, but years ago, the key that locks the "flywheel" to the engine shaft broke. That allowed the flywheel to shift on the shaft with respect to the piston movement, thus producing terrible timing. See if that is your problem and please let me know either way. This problem comes up alot on FixYa and I don't like guessing too often.

Check the resistance (ohms) of your new switch and wiring. Sounds a though you are not getting good voltage, also check battery voltage.

to be honest the enigne ahas a control that the left side must fire and run before the right starts to fire it sounds to me like you have a fuel issue possibly the carb. is gummed up and dirty.

Russ, it sounds like the needle is bad in the carburetor. if it dont seal right it will allow fuel to seep into the combustion chamber creating a hydro lock as some call it. the engine will seem tight and wont start also blow fuel out the exhaust. to fix this you will have to take the carb off and clean it real good and put a new needle in it it will run like new. good luck

14 hp kohler engine (Cv14s 1451) runs good for 5 minutes stalls then won't restart for 1.5 hrs. Took apart carb and cleaned, changed plug (increased power runs smoother but problem persists).
I had this issue on my 14hp kohler and it was the ignition module. Would run until it heated up then shut down.
