Why would my OBD or malfunction indicator light come on and stay on?

Check engine light comes on with faulty oxygen sensor, loose gas cap or faulty gas cap. sometimes with low octane fuel as well. fill up with high octane fuel, tighten down the cap and see if it helps.

Hi have a pontiac G6 GT 2005 I have a message that comes on saying check gas cap the 1st time it happened it was under warranty and the dealership replaced the gas cap for me, a year later the same thing...

The fuel cap needs to be tight or it will set a code. It's a pressurized fuel system. Try to tighten snug the code should clear itself. If this does'nt work exchage the fuel cap, it may not be working properly.

My check engine light came on code P0446; dashboard says "check gas cap" i took it off retightened it and check engine light still on. I noticed that the metal flap for the gas nozzle is...

The metal flap should not trigger the sensor. Once you tighten the gas cap you should clear the code and see if it comes back. Otherwise it will take a while to go away.
If it does come back even though the gas cap is tight it could be the rubber seal around the gas cap replacing that can sometimes fix this issue also.

When I'm on the road my check engine light comes on but it happens at different times, sometimes it never comes on or sometimes it comes on a few miles down the road. when I turn my car off then turn it...

The most common cause of this is the gas cap not being tightened completely after re-fueling or a worn rubber gasket on the cap.Remove the gas cap and turn it over and check the gasket if it looks like it's not worn put the gas cap back on and then tighten it until it clicks several times, then it make take a little while before the check engine light goes off. If this still happens shortly after tightening the gas cap have the check engine code read at an Automotive Parts store. Some stores have the code readers and they'll get what the code means and advise you at that point.

Engine Light/tighten fuel cap

Good Day,

Sounds like your fuel cap needs to be replaced, there is a rubber seal in there to which keeps fuel pressure up, when this seal goes bad you get a drop in pressure and your engine light will come on. Replace the cap with a new one. As far as your lighter ports that is probably due to a blown fuse and unrelated to the fuel cap issue.

Hope this helps
