My 2001 Hyundai Tiburon Ignition Key won't turn. Automatic Transmission Lever is in "Parked" Position." There is an "Override Button" next to the lever, but nothing happens when I try to push it in. Car won't start. Can you help?

With key position in off push the shift overdrive button then put in to nuetral then crank the car it will start in N.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Description
The brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system prevents the automatic transmission from being shifted out of PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed. When the brake pedal is depressed, the BTSI solenoid releases a lock pawl. This enables the shift linkage to move and the shift lever to operate.
When service operations are required, the BTSI system can be overridden.
On vehicles equipped with a column-mounted shift lever, override the BTSI system by performing the following steps:
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Remove battery voltage from the solenoid.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
For vehicles equipped with floor-mounted shift levers, an override lever is mounted on the right side of the assembly. The override lever can be accessed by removing the shift lever boot. Push the lever to the left in order to override the BTSI.

With Column Shift A/T
The brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system prevents the automatic transmission from being shifted out of the PARK position unless the following conditions are present:

When the ignition switch is in the RUN or the START position, the current flows from the B/U Lamp fuse located in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) through CKT 839 (PNK) to the park/neutral position switch. The park/neutral position switch also feeds the backup lamps portion of the switch. With the transmission in the PARK position, the current flows to the BTSI fuse located in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) through CKT 275 (LT GRN). The current then flows to the TCC/stoplamp switch through CKT 584 (LT GRN/BLK). The current continues to the BTSI solenoid through CKT 1135 (DK GRN/WHT). The ground path is provided through CKT 1850 (BLK) to G207. When the brake pedal is depressed, the normally closed contacts in the TCC/stoplamp switch open and the current flow is interrupted. When the current flow is interrupted, the BTSI solenoid de-energizes. The transmission may then shift to another gear. When the transmission shifts to another gear (except PARK), the contacts in the park/neutral position switch open. This condition stops the current flow to energize the solenoid when the brake pedal releases.

The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.

Replace ignition switch on 99 jeep wrangler

The ignition key must be in the key cylinder for cylinder removal. The key cylinder must be removed first before removing ignition switch.REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. 2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 3. Rotate key to ON position.4. A release tang is located on bottom of key cylinder.5. Position a small screwdriver or pin punch into tang access hole on bottom of steering column lower cover.INSTALLATION 1. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 2. Position key cylinder into steering column as it would normally be in the ON position. 3. Press key cylinder into column until it snaps into position. 4. Check mechanical operation of switch. Automatic Transmission: Be sure transmission lever is locked in PARK position after key removal. If key is difficult to rotate or is difficult to remove, the shift lever-to-steering column cable may be out of adjustment or defective. If key can be removed, release lever mechanism may be defective. Release lever mechanism is not serviced separately. If repair is necessary, the steering column must be replaced. 5. Important: Depress the button on the side of the shift lock actuator. With the button is depressed, cycle the plastic straw within the shift lever 3 to 5 times. The straw should move smoothly and freely except near the top of the travel where additional force will be required to mechanically actuate the park lock mechanism inside of the shift lock actuator. If there is stick/slip or abnormal friction while cycling the plastic straw or if the straw is altogether stuck in the lever, the entire control assembly (shifter and shift lock actuator) needs to be replaced. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement . If there is no abnormal friction, replace the shift lock actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Actuator Replacement .

Make sure that you car is completly in the park position, if your car is an automatic. The key will not be able to move out of the ignition if for instance something is blocking the shifter.

My 2002 tbird won't get out ofnpark

If you cannot move the gearshift lever out of P (Park) with ignition in
the RUN position and the brake pedal depressed:
1. Apply the parking brake, turn ignition key to LOCK, then remove the
key.
2. Insert the key and turn it to OFF. Apply the brake pedal and shift to N
(Neutral). This allows the automatic transmission shift lever to be
moved from the P (Park) position without the brake pedal
depressed.
3. Start the vehicle.
If it is necessary to use the above procedure to move the gearshift lever,
it is possible that a fuse has blown or the vehicle's brakelamps are not
operating properly.

This Is Park Lock Cable Failure here is the Replacment Procedure

Park Lock Cable Replacement

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  1. Remove the console.
  2. Remove the knee bolster.
  3. Loosen the lower steering column bracket bolts.
  4. Lower the steering column.
  5. Place the transmission shift lever in the PARK position. Important: Do not proceed to the next step with the key in any position other than the RUN position.
  6. Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.
  7. Insert a screwdriver blade into the slot provided in the ignition switch inhibitor.
  8. Depress the cable latch. Pull the control cable from the inhibitor.
  1. Push the cable connector lock button at the shifter base to the up position.
  2. Unsnap the cable from the park/lock lever pin.
  3. Depress the two cable latches. Remove the control cable latches from the automatic transmission control.
  4. Remove the control cable clips.
Installation Procedure

Important: When installing a new park/lock cable, keep the shipping cover gauge attached until you are instructed to detach it. The shipping cover gauge will aid in the proper positioning of the cable.


  1. Ensure that the cable lock button is in the up position. Place the shift lever in the PARK position.
  2. Snap the control cable connector into the automatic transmission control.
  3. Place the ignition key in the RUN position. Important: Do not insert the cable with the key in any position other than the RUN position.
  1. Snap the control cable into the inhibitor housing until the snap lock is seated.
  2. Remove the shipping cover gauge.
  3. Turn the key to the LOCK position.
  1. Snap the control cable end onto the shift park/lock lever pin.
  2. Push the cable connector hose forward in order to remove any slack.
  3. With no load applied to the connector nose, snap the cable connector lock button down. Important: Inspect for proper operation of the park/lock control cable before installing the steering column to the instrument panel.
  4. Raise and connect the steering column.
  5. Tighten the lower steering column bracket bolts.
  6. Install the knee bolster.
