A speedometer cable on a 1997 model year?I doubt it has one! It most likely has a vehicle speed sensor(all electronic). These sensors can go bad, should be easily replaceable from the outside of the transmission.
SOME CARS DON'T HAVE A SPEEDO CABLE! IT MAY BE ELECTRONIC THRU A SPEED SENSOR LOCATED ON TOP OF THE TRANSMISSION! IF YOU HAVE AN OBD-II CODE READER, THERE SHOULD BE A PLUG LOCATED UNDER THE DASH, THE CODE WILL PROBABLY BE A P0500!
You have an electronic speedometer (no cable); get a 'donor' instrument cluster from another (Nissan) vehicle and replace the speedo. OR If your mechanically/electronically inclined, you can replace justs the 'guts', i.e., motor and circuit board (might as well replace the odometer motor while your at it) to keep your original mileage. There is a step-by-step guide on the web how to do it.
When you Talk about information being sent electronically or by cable i believe your talking about your throttle body which doesn't have anything to do with your speedometer working but it is cable driven. just by hearing you say it sometimes works leads me to believe that you have a lose wire or corroded connection somewhere.
u need to pull and check the end of this sensor for metal, once again u don't have a speedometer cable, your speedometer is electronic and this sensor is what will cause the problem u are having, it is in the side of the transmission case. see photo
THERE IS A CABLE THAT GOES TO THE SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION THAT TELLS THE SPEEDOMETER HOW FAST THE TRUCK IS GOING. INSIDE THIS CABLE IS A SMALL GEAR THAT IS MADE OF PLASTIC. SOMETIMES THIS GEAR GETS WORN OUT AND WILL NOT READ THE SPEED. I THINK THIS IS THE PROBLEM YOU ARE HAVING NOW. CHECK IT OUT AND LET ME KNOW. HOPE THIS HELPS. GOOD LUCK
