I have a 12.5 hp Briggs & Stratton on a Murray that did that. The carburator is right above the muffler and when I replaced the muffler, I didn't put the heat shield between the muffler and carburator back on. The added heat from the muffler was vaporizing the gas in the carburator where the engine would no longer run once it got hot. Replacing my heat shield and putting a longer pipe on the muffler to get it away from the carburator solved my problem.

One thing to check, see if there is a piece of root stuck under the tractor there is interrupting any of the security features from allowing the tractor to start. It might be a small piece that stops a plunger from engaging.

SOURCE: 15.5 ohv briggs and stratton

It could be "starving" for gas, not getting enough gas. Check the plug, if it is white then the engine is running to lean and will overheat. If this is the problem, then the carbertor will have to be adjusted, and or cleaned, or replaced.

SOURCE: I have a problem a Craftsman 18hp 42 in deck--it stops running.

The problem is called vapor lock. It occurs when the fuel in your supply line is vaporizing just before it gets to the fuel pump and the fuel pump is not designed to pump vapor so you run out of fuel.

Possible solutions are to re-route your fuel line so that it doesn't get hot from the engine and/or run the mower during the cool parts of the day only. It might be as simple as getting some new gasoline as winter bought gasoline will always vapor lock if used in the summer time as they alter the formula for gasoline on weekly basis to stay ahead of vapor lock problems nationwide. Way back when cars were mostly carbureted it was a MAJOR summer time pain. The three options given above remain the best solutions for this ages old problem.

SOURCE: craftman 18hp briggs @srat starts then cut off when it gets hot

I hope all that time and money was worth it - there are classic symptoms of a blocked gas cap vent. Vacuum forms in tank - no fuel flow - engine stalls. Wait a bit - air leaks in, engine starts again (for a while.....).

To completely elimnate a chassis wiring issue, simply disconnect the mag cable from the engine. The only possible culprit if there are still electrical problems is the coil itself - which you already replaced.

remove the cooling cowl and clean the grass and dirt rom around the cooling fins of the head as it is probably getting to hot and the fuel is evaporating before it gets to the cylinder.

Briggs& Stratton 18hp OHV Intek engine will run only under a load.

Your PTO safety switch is opening intermittently. Would help if you would always add your model # such as 917.100000 that way I could look up on Sears site and tell you approx. Location of switch.

How to adjust the valves on b/s 18hp model 422707

Though the valves are adjustable, in a grinding cutting kind of way- they require the valve be removed from the block to do so. So no actual adjuster. The good news is, this "L head" engine doesn't have the same issues as the OHV family and rarely ever need valve service at all. Are you having difficulty

What would make gas flow out of the spark plug hole on a briggs and stratton 18hp ohv intek?

If you are getting that much gas out of the cylinder you most likely have a stuck fuel float valve or the float itself is damaged in the carburator. Make sure you check your crankcase for gas also, usually when a float valve sticks it also fills up the crankcase with gas. Hopefully you just have some debris caught between the needle valve and seat that can be blown out. If not replacing the needle valve and seat or float is relatively inexpensive.

You might want to checked your fuel line coming from the tank, sometime it will collaspe inside the line and not allow enough gas to get to the engine.
