1983 f150 351w distributor cap placement

Replaced intake manifold and carb but spark plug wires were mixed up on reassembly. Distributor cap has 1 marked but it is not located in the position that the diagrams show number 1 should be. Is this a problem? Does anyone have a picture showing which wires go where?

I assume its a V8 and probably a 5.0L

5.0= 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 firing order

5.0 HO and 351 Windsor share 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order

Cylinder numbering:

When looking into the engine bay the number one cylinder should be on your left hand side (left bank) at the front of the engine. The number eight cylinder is on the rear right (right bank) up against the firewall.

put no 1 on compression stroke, then move front pulley on top dead centre the rotor button should point no1 stamped on the cap the place lead in anti clockwise direction to the plugs in order the fireing order is stamped on the inlet manifold near distributor.

Just check the Haynes book for that model and they tell you the firing order and how can you start putting yours spark plugs wires on the cap. You can check the book at the library or buy it at autozone or can go to autozone.com and look for electric diagramas.

When i turn on my 04 taurus. It starts makin knock sound , i replaced my lower intake n i think i missplaced the spark plug wiring

If the spark plug wiring is not correct, the engine will misfire and that will create erratic combustion, which is a shock to the cylinder, which results in a load harsh noise. Locate the number 1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap and trace each wire to the spark plugs. The firing order will be listed on the intake manifold. Make the correct wire to spark plugs attachments as needed.

After replacing my intake manifold and carburetor my engine wont start, only sometimes but it would sound ugly and run very roughly at 400 rpm. PLEASE HELP

You have leaks in your gaskets. or vacuum lines removed and not replaced or broken in the operation. trace air leaks with propane torch unlit. where engine speed increases, you have an air or vacuum leak.

Spark plugs and wires

It sounds like the spark plug wires are not plugged into the correct place on the distrubutor. take the distributor cap off and crank the engine over. Make a note of which direction the rotor spins. (Clockwise, or Counterclockwise) then find the firing order for that engine. Sometimes the firing order is on the intake manifold. (if you tell me which engine it has, the 4 cylinder 2.0, or the 6 cylinder 2.5; I could post you the firing order). Now on the distributor cap there is one wire post that has the #1 on it, that would be where you put the spark plug wire from cylinder 1. Following the rotation of the distributor rotor, you would put the spark plug wire for the next cylinder in the firing order after the #1 wire, and so on.

FIRING ORDERS
NOTE: To avoid confusion, tag and remove the spark plug wires
one at a time, for replacement.

If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it
could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold
the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug
towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you
label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare
the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring
does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired.

Chev 396 backfires through carburator while starting then stalls. Is the timing Advanced and if so how do I change it enough to get the car running?

Hi wyocwboy here, Have you changed Spark Plug Wires ,or distributor Cap & Rotor? If you have this really sounds more like a Few spark Plug Wires have Been put on wrong. If you have'nt changed opr moved any of the wires or changed cap & rotor,Its Possible that your Timing Chain has jumped a Notch.Clean off your Damper -Which is the Bottom Pully your Hamonic Balacer, then rotate your enging until you Find your Timing Marks, Clean good and take a Marker or best a Chalk or Soap stick and mark it a 8 Degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) Hook up a Timimg like Assuming it does run.And see if your able to see the Timing light Flashing on the mark if not Rote your Distributor either way Slowly and See if you can get the Light on the MARK you Made on The Harmonic Balancer. If Not Either Your Timing Chain Jumped a Notch or your Distributor may be off a nocth. To Check to see if your Timing Chain Jumped a Notch =Remove the COIL WIRE from Distributor Cap So it Won't Start then Remove #-1 Spark Plug Have a Friend Turn the Key off and On just Bumping the Engine a Little at a Time,Keeping a Compression Gauge in the #-1 Plug Hole When the Gauge Needle goes up you are close to TDC (TOP DEAD CENTER) STOP THERE .Check to see if the Mark on your Bottom Pully you made is at or Close to Ling up on top dead center. Trace #-1 Spark Plug Wire up to the Distributor Cap Remember the wires In the Dist. Caps Position or mark it to. Pull the Cap off The Distributor Rotor Should Be Pointing to Close to Where Your Number 1-Spark Plug Wire was Located.
Run These Series Of Tests and it Should Tell you or Give you a Very Good Idea of Your Problem. Please Let Me Know if This Helped You. FROM THE WYOCWBOY

1983 F250 will crank but not start

timing may be way off, distributor rotor may not be pointing at no. 1 distributor cap contactor when no. 1 piston is at top dead center. Also, confirm your spark plug wiring order on dist. cap is correct.

Intake manifold gasket

make sure the #1 cylinder is at top dead center then make sure the rotor in the distributor is pointing at the # 1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap............if you have already done this you have the timing 180 degrees out and you need to point the rotor 1 half turn(exactly opposite the #1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap)

I had the same problem with my 85 cj7 this week, I relpaced the ignition control module, plugs, wires, cap, rotor and the the coil; still had no fire to plugs. the problem turned out to be my distributor, replaced it today and she fired right up. Most likely it was the pick up module in the distributor that went bad.
