We have a 1986 Cadillac with a 5.0 liter engine. It loses power going up hills and also there is pedal hesitation when going up hills. When you apply more pedal, it does nothing for a couple of seconds. Also the check engine light will come on.

Check your tail pipe for color. If insides are black you are running rich and it all may boil down to an oxygen sensor or an EGR valve. EGR valves are the most common causes for the 'check engine' light to come on. Your trouble codes will tell you what it is. Some auto stores will check it for free or you can buy an inexpensive checker.
SOURCE: check engine light code 51
there is a code 51 first of all, try putting octane boost in the tank, there has been several completes all across the country of watered gas, i have a 96 and a 95 neon and within days of filling both up the code 51 came up. the boost helped 1 and the MAP sensor had to be replaced on the 96. hope this helps
SOURCE: Check engine light is on for my 2003 Kia Rio. At
my 01 did that and it was the plug wires it bucked real bad
next time it happened it was just sluggish up hills and light would come on. it was the fuel filter it had 255,000 miles on it
SOURCE: 2004 Kia Rio - sputters and hesitates when going
IT COULD BE DIRTY CLOGGED FUEL INJECTORS OR BAD SPARK PLUGS + WIRES STOPPED UP AIR FILTER. BUT HAVE CAR SCANNED IT COULD BE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR OR VOLUME AIR FLOW SENSOR.COULD BE MANY THINGS.
SOURCE: My 2000 honda crv loses power coming up a hill,
My car is doing the same thing.... I have found that the likely cause is the catalytic converter.....I just had my factory converter replaced when the clamp rusted out...about 5 months ago...I'm heading back to the garage to see what they can do about the replacement one failing.
