Cant get golf in 1st gear

I think it's 1985 or 1986 model not sure. Its a 1600 with 5 gears. Lately it battles to get into 1st gear. The other seems to be fine, its only 1st that battles - a lot. What is wrong, and is there anything I can do to fix this??

If you'd said 1st and reverse I would have said clutch. First check your gear sgift rod for aligbnment. If it is out when you push the gear lever left to engage 1st your selector might be somewhere between 1st and 2nd. Next check all the linkage bushes for wear. Those also cause misalignment. Last thing to check is the gearbox itself for synchromesh damage.

yes. you have to check the plastic/rubber moulding at the linkages under the hood. maybe one of them is missing (fallen out because of wear)

SOURCE: 97 VW Golf Automatic wont start, battery fully charged

MY guess would be that it's the starter, with an automatic transmission, if the car is not in park or neutral, the car wont even attempt to start, so the clicking sound you say you hear rules that out. Now, im not an "expert" or anything just a guy with some general knowlege, so before you do anything i would recommend having it looked at, but if you feel confident enough, the starter is where i would begin, hope this helps, and good luck.

I have a 2005 Saturn Vue, lately I've noticed my gear shift is super hard to shift into 1st & so on. Is it the cold weather, and if so, is there something i can do to make it manageabl

check clutch hydrolics to make sure fluid is not low. Try double clutching. When in neutral, push clutch in, then out and in again and try shifting into low.

Cant find any gears

Have you tried manually shifting the linkage in the engine compartment? If you pull the flap towards you and to the right that should be 1st gear. If that works, than the linkage is the problem. Good luck!

Hi, I have a vw golf 2003 2L sport 5speed manual. It doesn't shift into 1st gear; what could be the problem?

The problem is the 1st gear synchronizer damaged. You need to replace it with new one. For this operation you need to remove the gearbox out from the car, then dismounting the gearbox, and replace the 1st gear synchronizer.

Vw golf mk4 no 1st & 2nd gear

You say there is no gears! does it go into gear, if so is there a horrible crunch??? can you put it into gear when the engine is turned off!
Sounds like to me that one of the linkage rods have broken/come off, these rods are situated just off the gearbox from the gear lever! there should be two rods i think! check these for damage/missing! replace if necessary!
Hope this helps

Wont shift into drive

Have you changed the fluid & filter lately? Start there, much cheaper fix than anything else.

VW GOLF 1.4 1999 S. Gearbox makes whining sound at idle. once clutch is pressed sound goes. car drives fine with no noise in 1st-4th gears. unable to select 5th gear.. just grinds and wont engage. VW Golf...

No good news on this one I think
Your whining sound problem is the Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are badly worn. It also seems that the baulk rings are damaged on 5th gear.
