If starter just spins and does not engage flywheel. it is usually the starter solinoid not kicking it out. when energized the solinoid, if good. kicks the starter gear into flywheel to turn engine over to start it. good-day !
it doesn't do it all the time, but tonight it took 4 tries to get it to actually start. In the past few weeks it would do it and I just thought it was me because if it doesn't start right up i don't continue to grind it to avoid overheating the ignition switch which had the recall. I bought the car used 6 yrs ago and it has been a good car with little more than regular maintenance. I do not know if the recall was ever done on this car. It's a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire GT 2.4L

Interesting problem, on the starter is a "trigger" wire that originates from the ignition (may run to the power distribution center). When the truck is started 12 volts runs down that wire and activates the solinoid on the starter. Put a 12 volt test light on the trigger wire by the starter, have someone hit the key to start, test light should come on, if not chase wire back and look for a break in the wire or replace trigger wire.

Do you have a Chip in the Key? if so that Could be the Problem,Ya see the chip is a resistor and if it looses its ELECTRONIC VALUE in its Case Resistance it wont start to test this Turn the Key in the ON posission then do the Screwdriver thing If it Starts Key is Good and Most Likely the Ignition (SWITCH) is Bad <<ELECTRICAL Side NOY LOCKEST SIDE For More Info Recontact Me

The problem is either the starter solinoid (located on fender near battery) or you are not getting power to the "s" terminal on the starter solinoid from the ignition switch. If you follow the positive battery cable from the battery you'll follow it to the solinoid. Remove the small wire from the terminal marked "s" on the solinoid and using a screwdriver jump from "s" terminal (not the wire) to where positive battery cable connects to solinoid. (with battery connected). If starter doesn't do anything the solinoid is bad. If starter cranks then you are not getting voltage from ignition switch through "s" terminal wire.

check the wire going to the clutch or tranny switch for power from the ignition switch if there is no power there the ignition switch needs replace

you have a crossed wire thats blowing the fuse. Check all wires to the starter also to the fuse box and to the battery
