You will hear a ticking sound on the top of the motor. If you hace a bent valve you will begin to have poor performance from your vehicle. Replacing valves isn't dificult. Just time consuming.
You should take the belt off and examine it. If that is what was starting to burn, you will have to replace it. And now check all the pulleys to see if one of them has siezed up. Spin every one around by hand, feel for roughness or stiffness, or if it wobbles. If you find one that is siezed, replace it. That is where all the squalling started.
I suggest that you go to your local dealer and look at their manual. The manuals at the auto parts suppliers are very general in some areas like this one. All you would find there would be how to change it out and what oil to use.
Van will run but first get under and take off the centre muffler and then start if runs ok then replace exhaust system complete...
If still wont go you could have a blockage in the manifold but if the exhaust was buggard and bent it stopped the gasses coming out, like backing into a load of dirt and filling up the tail pipe with mud.
Or the catty converter is buggered.
