I have a 1994 Ford Explorer 4x4 that I have to accelerate to 3 to 4000 RPM before it it will go into drive. After it's in drive it shifts through all gears smoothly. after I take it out of drive I have to accelerate to 3 or 4000 RPM again before it will go back into drive. I have no problem with reverse. Please be more specific. Most cars with automatic transmissions will roll forward in Drive or backwards in Reverse. If the car is on a slope, it can roll due to gravity, even backwards in a forward gear. If you mean the car is rolling when it's in Park, either the transmission is faulty or it's not fully engaging in Park. A third possibility is that you mean that, after stopping with the brakes, the car begins to roll with your foot still on the brake. That would be a brake problem. If you've had the car for a while and this is a noticeable change, take it to a mechanic and have it checked. Explain your concerns clearly.
replace the starter. Being a manual transmission you should be able to pop the clutch to get it going till you replace the starter. If you don't know how to pop the clutch follow these steps. That way you can still drive the car. When need to.
Get inside the vehicle
and depress the clutch to shift the car into "Neutral." Insert the key
into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position. This is the place
the key would be after a normal turn of the ignition switch for
starting. Instead, with a clutch pop, the ignition will already need to
be on so that when the engine is turned over, the key is in the On
position.
Move the car in position to be pushed from behind or sent
down a slope for the starting procedure. Check to see that the brakes
will work when pressed and how hard the steering wheel will need to be
turned before the vehicle is started. Power steering and brakes will
make both systems work poorly until the vehicle is started.
3
Sitting inside the driver's seat with the clutch depressed,
put the shifter into first gear. Keep your foot depressed onto the
clutch and the brake pedal without depressing the brake pedal. Roll down
the window and signal to your helper to push. As the car rolls, you
will steer toward any slope that will assist the helper in getting the
car down the street. Allow the momentum of the vehicle to increase to
constant motion.
4
Release the clutch quickly and be prepared to throttle the
gas pedal as the engine is turned over by the motion of the vehicle.
When in gear, the engine will be forced to crank and the ignition will
send a spark for a start. The quicker the vehicle is going before the
clutch is released will determine how many times the engine will turn
over. More cranks equal more opportunities to ignite the gas and air for
combustion and the engine to start without a battery or starter
Hi, Try releasing your parking brake and having someone push or rock your car. Sometimes the gearbox gets stuck in Park if the car moves after you put the car in Park and let the car roll a bit before applying the handbrake. It could also be a fault with the gearbox itself. Its also possible that the locking tab mechanism (that gets relesed when you press the button on your auto gear shift) has jammed. If you can get it out of Park do not put the car back into Park ,but rather put it in Neutral after you have finished driving around etc and use the hand brake when parking. At least you wont be stuck in Park until you get it to the repair shop. Note that your car can roll in Neutral, especially if your parking brakes are worn, so take extra care when parking ie point your wheels toward the kerb when parking on any hills or slopes. Any time your gearbox gets stuck its a fair bet that you need to get your gearbox inspected by an authorized repairer. Good luck, Steve (Melbourne, Australia)
Hi all, I have a 2002 Renault Megane 1.6 Convertible and experienced exactly the same fault. Needed a team effort but we found a very easy quick fix to this problem. If you take the plastic cover off from under the gear shifter, you will notice a release button covered by a rubber cover. Pressing this release button allows the gear shifter to move from its locked/jammed position. (This is not the fix but it helps with the fix). If you are fortunate enough to have a 2nd person available, have them poke their head under the bonnet to watch the Gearbox cable move....while you are shifting the gear shifter inside the vehicle. Your partner will see that a cable with a plastic locking device (right hand side of the engine cover) has popped off the shifter for the transmission. Move the shifter until you can physically put the plastic locking device back on the shifter mechanism and your all good to go. No need for that new gearbox that you might have been quoted on!! An easy fix that I am surprised no mechanically minded professional/body in the world has volunteered the solution to. I wonder why????
