I have two issues with a '97 cabrio that I just purchased for my teenage daughter. 1. There is a small leak of oil looking substance. After 1 day it was maybe the size of a silver dollar. It appears to be coming from the backside of the transaxle where it meets the oil pan. 2. Also, I made the mistake of not test driving large distance in reverse. After getting it home, when backing out of driveway, I noticed a strange sound. The car has a manual transmission and only makes this sound while the wheels are turning and in reverse. Does not make the sound rolling backwards in neutral.

Most reverse gears on manual transmissions are square cut which makes them whine when engaged, all forward gears are helically cut and are therefore silent in comparison. Do you think the noise you experience is down to gear whine? The drop of oil could be a partly worn half shaft oil seal. Oil seals tend to be a bit stiff when cold and occasionally but after warming up they resume flexibility and become oil tight. Determine that it is in fact gear oil and not engine oil running down the back of the engine from the PCV or head gasket. Determine that the respective oil levels are where they should be on the dip sticks. Monitoring the oil consumption/loss on the dip stick is the critical thing to do over the longer term. If the loss of oil, between 10,000 service intervals, is low, say about half a pint, this will be not even enough to take it to the MINIMUM on the oil stick. When you change the oil put in enough to take it to the MAXIMUM level. Often it is much cheaper to overlook very minor oil loss rather than face the cost, effort and disruption to have a cylinder head gasket replaced.

Egr valve chevy lumina '97 3.1 lumina ,i pulled the egr there was a white greasey substance in it as well as well as the passages to the throttle body and and exhaust, what is it,where did it come...

that sounds as if your engine breather system requires cleaning, the substance is emulsified oil, normally caused by poor oil, lack of oil changes, or possibly head gasket problems, clean out all the breather hoses, filter etc, run engine until warm, drain engine oil and refill with a good quality oil, renew oil filter and then run and check again after a few miles

My 97 cadillac deville over heated 1 time on the highway. after filling it with coolant i dont have any problems. why did it overheat that 1 time

if you are using coolant that is mixed 50-50 with water, the water will evaporate. If you are having issues and using straight antifreeze without a water mixture, you may have a small coolant leak or a small leak in the head gasket.

Where is the commen oil leak on a 97 ford taurus

Maybe, maybe not, It's most likely a bad rear seal or worn main bearings but check the oil filter just to be safe. Sometimes things go wrong when changing the oil filter that can cause similar symptoms.
1) old gasket left behind.
2) cross threaded filter.
3) loose filter.
4) damage gasket or defective new filter.

My 97 cabrio 2.0L is leaking oil from the top of oil filter mount

Yes this a simple fix but if you don't do your own repairs it will cost about $150. There is a o ring in the oil cooler that is a frequent problem on theses engines. its a $5 part but labor is about 1.5 hours. hope this helps good luck.

Oil leaking..

Sounds like your oil leak is finding hot exhaust manifold and smoking/smelling. Make sure the oil filler caps and breather hoses that connect to the valve cover (Top of Engine) are attached securely. Try and determine exactly where the oil leak originates [Valve covers - top side, oil pan - underneath, or shaft seals - front and rear of engine, or left and right ends with the sideways (transverse) engine mounting]. Also check oil level - a blown head gasket or cracked head or block could lose coolant into the oil reservoir, causing an overfilled and thus leaking situation... this will show up as a creamy looking substance on the dipstick. If the engine is not making any other signs of abnormality, strange knocks or clicks, overheating, or losing gross amounts of fluids, make sure it has enough oil in the crankcase and drive it to a reputable mechanic for a true evaluation of the problem.
