Get the engine to #1 TDC (line up the timing marks), orientate the distrubutor rotor by moving the shaft in its drive till the rotor lines up with the cap alignment cut-out in the distributor body. Replace the cap. This will be #1 plug. In a clockwise direction, fit the wire for number 3, number 4, number 2. Carry out a normal timing procedure with a timing light etc.. If the engine will not start or backfires you had the pulley at #4 TDC. Turn the crankshaft 180 deg and realign the distributor shaft as above.
