Hello lemofla: My name is Roger and I will help with your question. It is not necessary to remove the rear axle from the differential in order to replace the wheel bearing. This operation does require some special tools and alignment of the car to complete the job. You will need to remove the nut on the axle stub at the rear wheel hub. The rear brakes and spindle unit must be removed. The splash shield rivets must be drilled out so the shield is not damaged. You will need a press and snap ring pliers in order to remove the bearing hub from the old bearing. Once the hub is removed you will need to press the bearing out of the spindle. When all is reassembled the dust shield should be reattached with new aluminum rivets. Reinstall the spindle and brakes. Torque the axle nut to 221 (ft.lb.). It may also be necessary to push the axle shaft stub out of the hub with a puller as the axle can be stuck. As you can tell this is not a quick fix and does take special equipment. So if you do this yourself PLEASE be careful and pay close attention to the way things came apart and be sure to have the car realigned. Should you not realign the car it will not drive right and you will prematurely destroy the tire on the side worked on. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

00 Linc LS to have a rear wheel bearing replaced does it take one bearing for the rear wheel

The bearing has to be pressed off and the new one back on the axle. There is no other way to get it off the axle without causing extra damage. You'll have to take the cover off the differential to remove the parts holding the axle in. Yes. there is only one bearing for the rear wheel.

Axle stuck

This web site is not a professional prospective

It is a face book type worldwide forum of ask
& answer by anyone

I have a 2004 LS V8 & all the factory manuals &
50 years of automotive experience, but still no one
can just guess without the car to check over & you
to talk to

The rear diff is not likely locked, nor are the rear drive
axles an issue

I would go with a transmission issue

There-- I have once owned a professional trans
repair shop

You could just have a shift linkage issue or dirty
valve body

I would suspect you need to change the Solenoid
Pack inside the trans pan

It is on piece with 7 solenoids

If you don't change trans fluid every 3 years on all
vehicles they fail & any flushing services is asking
for trouble as well

Need detailed manual or assistance in replacing left rear axle seal and bearing on 2005 GMC Sierra pickup with 5.3L engine and a 324 rear end

You'll need to remove the rear end cover, remove the pin in the center pumpkin, push axle toward the center of vehicle and remove the axle clip, pull out axle. You may need a bearing puller to remove bearing.

2002 dodge 1500 rear end making whining nosie

This could be one of several problems: If the noise increases with speed, and you are only hearing it from the rear differential and not the transmission, it could be the rear differential carrier bearings, or rear axle bearings going bad. If you are only hearing the noise upon acceleration or deceleration, the rear differential ring and/or pinion gears may be going bad and the rear differential will need an overhaul. You'll have to get the rear wheels off the ground and see if you can pinpoint the location of the noise with something such as a stethoscope. If it's coming from the rear differential, you'll need to pull the bolts and the cover to determine if the gears are still in good shape, or if there is any pitting. Same with the carrier bearings; if you see pitting/ discoloration, they'll need replacement. If the noise is coming from one side towards the end of the axle shaft near the wheel, it's most likely a axle bearing going bad, and you'll need to pull the wheels, remove the diff. cover to release the C clip which holds the rear axle in place at the differential, and pull the axle out. You also need a special tool with a slide hammer to remove the axle bearing and seal.
