Short shoe on the front long shoe on the back. Drum style brakes are self energizing. When the wheel cylinder pushes the shoes out, the front shoe tries to spin with the drum, which pushes on the adjuster, pressing on the rear shoe. So the rear shoe is pushed into the drum by the wheel cyl, and the front shoe.

The drum brake theme has many diverse versions, although the majority follow a similar logic. The hydraulic servo, which is where the brake mechanism actually begins, pushes a piston and a rod using fluid pressure provided by the master cylinder. The top end of the front brake shoe, or primary brake shoe, is often connected to that rod; the bottom end of the shoe is typically attached to a pivot. The rod pivots outward and presses against the interior of the spinning wheel drum when it contacts the shoe. The drum is slowed by friction between the friction material of the shoe and the drum.

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02.
  1. Remove the wheel.

I cant figure out how to assemble the back brake shoes and springs back together

Maybe to late for this but if you do one side at a time just look at the other side for how they go together. Also the short shoe goes toward the front long toward the back.
1. Clean and inspect individual brake components.
2. Lubricate anchor pin an brake show contact pads on support plate with high temperature grease or
Lubriplate. See Fig. 41 .
3. Lubricate adjuster screw socket, nut, button, and screw thread surfaces with grease or Lubriplate.
4. Install the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
5. Install parking brake lever to the secondary shoe and install retaining clip.
6. Install primary shoe on support plate. Secure shoe with new spring retainers and pin.
7. Install spring on parking brake strut and engage strut in primary.
8. Install secondary shoe on support plate. See Fig. 42 . Insert strut in shoe and guide shoe onto anchor pin.
Temporarily secure shoe with restraining pin.
9. Install anchor plate and adjuster cable eyelet on support plate anchor pin.
10. Install cable guide in secondary shoe and position cable in guide.
CAUTION: Be sure the adjuster screws are installed on the correct brake unit. The adjuster screws are marked
"L" (left) or "R" (right) for identification
11. Assemble adjuster screw. See Fig. 43 . Then install adjuster screw between the brake shoes.
12. Install adjuster lever and spring, and connect adjuster cable to lever.
13. Install secondary shoe retainers and spring.
14. Install shoe spring. Connect spring to secondary shoe first, then to primary shoe.
15. Verify adjuster operation. Pull adjuster cable upward, cable should lift and rotate star wheel. Be sure
adjuster lever properly engages star wheel teeth.
16. Adjust brake shoes. See REAR BRAKE SHOES under ADJUSTMENTS.
17. Install wheel and tire assembly. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Mazda miata 2003 replaced rear brake pads now parking brake does not work any ideas?

Doe's the back brakes work? Is number 7 and 15 hooked up right? If they are. Try backing up and hitting brakes, This will tigjhten them up.

How complicated would it be to change rear drum brakes? I'm not a mechanic but I am mechanical. My rear drums and shoes need to be replaced. Thought I could do it and save the cost of the auto shop. Thanks...

It is a fairly easy job, the brakes shoes are the hardest part, It has shoes? Get the drums off, a couple hits with a brass hammer should do it. If they are stuck, you might need to reach in the back with an adj tool and close them up a bit, if it gets tighter, you're going the wrong way. If the drums are smooth, you won't need to turn them, if they are gouged up, rough, have lines in them, they need to be turned.Get the shoes off, put the new ones on, clean that mess up with the air gun, put on a dab of grease at the rub spots, pull the springs tight, put the drums on, adj the shoes out till they rub, you are all set, that is how most cars would be done, you might have a little different set up. Hope this helps.

I'm assuming you mean drum brakes as they are the only ones with primary and secondary shoes. Not all drum brakes have a primary and secondary shoes. On drum brakes with primary and secondary shoes (called duo servo systems) the front shoe is slightly smaller than the rear one and is the primary shoe. On non servo systems, the shoes are the same size -- there is no primary or secondary shoe.

I need a detailed discription for reassembling of the rear brakes.

A- Rotate the auto-adjuster counterclockwise.
B- Remove the primary shoe.
12. Disconnect the secondary shoe from the strut support.
13. Remove the parking brake return spring.

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
