When given gas it sputters like its not getting gas

This sounds like an ignition problem. Check the ignition coil. Low spark voltage can cause this. As well, the amplifier module in the HEI distributer could be at fault.

You might have some compression issues from bad piston rings or worn valves. Could have a leaky vacuum hose or intake. Throttle body or carburetor may be dirty as well. Check the Map sensor. Hope this gives you some good ideas.

Low fuel pressure can cause this or a clogged filter, has the fuel pressure been checked? Has the fuel filter ever been changed?

First i would replace the fuel filter. If the fuel filter is clogged it will not let ample amount of fuel to the engine. Very cheap part and usually is easy to replace. Might want to get the fuel pump checked out.

This could be caused by many different things. Do some research before you throw more parts at the problem. Try to extract the diagnostic code first. An engine needs 3 things to run: spark, fuel, and air. Your problem could arise from any of the 3 sources. Things to check include intake vacuum, ignition timing, fuel pressure to start. More information is needed to diagnose the symptoms you describe.

ignition module or crank sensor which is inside the distributor on this age of vehicle is what i would check first

check the generator to see if it putting out enough volts

Vacuum leaks,Use carby cleaner sprayed lightly around suspect areas like injector seals engine will react and pin point a leak.H/T leads could be tracking or breaking down.Plugs may require replacement.Injectors could be dirty,try can of injector cleaner next time you fill the vehicle up.Is the air box and lid securely fastened and intake tube to throttle body leak free with no holes etc?There are a number of things it could be and tried to cover a few of them as its hard to imagine engine condition etc.Check that advance/****** can on distributor is functioning correctly(not leaking)Could also be air flow meter anyway let me know how you go Good luck
