I have a 1999 Acura TL with 200K miles on it. It always had a tap that sounded like a bad valve, but recently it started tapping making a sound like an overhead cam hitting metal as the car accelerated. I had it checked out at the acura dealership and it revealed a broken ignition coil which when they tried to replace it with a test coil the spark plug would not tighten up. When the engine cranks without it there is a loud engine noise. Question what can be done beside replacing the engine?

Most auto parts places (autozone, advance, ect) sell a spark plug rethreading kit, with a steel insert. Basically you enlarge the hole, then rethread it, then install a steel insert. This kit will work, I have personally used it with great success. My own comments are this though: when you are using the cutting/retheading tool pack it with wheel bearing grease to help catch the shavings. Before you install the insert breifly start the car and let it blow any shavings out of the cylinder. Then when you install the insert use the highest grade of loc-tite they have. My kit said to use RTV but I prefer loc-tite. Follow the instructions to the tee and give the loc-tite 24 hours to cure before starting the engine and you should be fine! Good luck!

1999 suburban lifer noise

if you have a stethascope or even a wood dowel i would check the lifters. if you have higher miles this sounds like a hydraulic lifter pumping up. if you change to a heavier oil it will go away or reduce. thats the cheap fix.

There is ticking sound coming from the engine

ticking tells me you have a rocker arm tap most motors get it with high miles un less you want to change the cam and lifters if the tap isnt to bad it wont hurt the motor

I recently had the problem where nothing would happen when i tried to start the car. The negative battery cable was corroded so i replaced it. The car worked great. The the same problem. The starter was sticking. After tapping on it , the car would crank. I replaced the starter for about $90 and it runs great again.

1999 Acura 3.2 TL has 87,000 miles changed spark plugs but starting RPM still low about 500; sometimes it takes two starts using gas pedal. Can you adjust Idle or does it need timing adjusted.

You need to replace your IAC (idle air control valve). The IAC, like it sounds, control the idle of your car. When they go bad they will cause the low idle and stalling. The IAC is located on the throttle body and is usually held on with a couple of screws. It is an easy relatively cheap fix that you can take care of by yourself. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

1999 Acura TL Problem

The problem is the ignition wiring harness, as described in the May 2002 Recall 02V120000. I tried to get Acura to replace it a second time (first time they replaced it was at 75K miles) with no success. Car started stalling/restarting again at 200K miles. I bought the part mentioned in the recall (~$70) and installed it myself - have not had a reoccurrence since.
