I try to spray starter fluid to air cleaner and engine start on second crank. I also check the fuel pressure at the shrader valve port and si reading about 50psi as soon I turn the ignition key on.

  • goagee1 Jun 25, 2008

I do change oil every 4000 miles.

  • goagee1 Jul 01, 2008

I am covinced that the problem is not related to lowe compression of wornout engin.

I just solved this very same issue with mine... You can chase every rainbow with this one. It turned out to be a bad connection at the starter motor... sounds silly but it worked. Clean up the connections (or replace the starter like I did) Fires right up. I thought it was a sensonsor or something because it would turn over no problem but because of the connection, it just wasn't getting the right juice to fire... try it first. :)

You have low fuel pressure, pressure at fuel rail test port should be 60-66 psi "key on" (as fuel pump hums)

Always start with the simple stuff in situations like this, clean the throttle body, make sure there are no obvious vacuum leaks under the hood and that the air cleaner housing is installed properly, check spark plugs, replace fuel filter, check ignition coils, check fuel pump pressure etc. etc. I would bet you have a dirty throttle body, which can easily be cleaned by your mechanic or fast lube place. I would start there first. You are due for new plugs, so that would be my next step if a clean throttle body still gives you trouble.

Hope that helps........

I think you probably need a tune up, new plugs and new ignition wires cap and rotor..If your wires are bad any moisture will cause a hard start.. After 100,000 miles I would estimate an 8 year old car would need new ignition paerts..Good Luck

You may be getting a weak spark and that is why it will start ok on starting fluid. Pull a couple of the spark plugs and check to see if they are wet or if they are really black. If this is the case I would recommend changing the plugs. Also there is a redesigned rotor cap for the 5.7 liter with more ventilation (moisture escape). This will sometimes also cause issues. If these issues check out the engine temperature sensor that the ECM uses may be bad which in turn will throw off the fuel mixture. Is the service engine or check engine light lighting up? If it is you can run to a local auto parts store like autozone and they will scan the code for you for free. Keep me posted.

1 Checking any the (dirt)deposits on the plugs.

2. Check if your car got blue smoke when you start. like on the morning.
- if you do have blue smoke , that would be indicative of bad valve seals. Otherwise could be broken or worn compression rings. Again, checking the plugs shows a lot. Bad rings also throw smoke when accel after decel.

3. Have you serviced the PCV system? Checked for blow-by? Idle engine, remove oil filler cap, put thin paper over filler.

4. If the problem shows on plug deposits and all cyls about the same, the engine has been run low on oil.

My 1999 gmc savana van turns over but does not

could be a bad fuel pump, or fuel pump relay. they are having problems(a lot) with the ethanol in the gas on GM products.Fuel pumps sales are through the roof at parts house on GM's. Have a pressure check on your fuel system. That is probably it. Add a can of Seafoam to your fuel every 3000 miles to alleviate this problem.

Hard start

Its your fuel pump.I had the same plomblem not too long ago.I was spraying either in to start it.I have a 97 chevy truck witch requires 65 psi to start and 55 to run properly. You need to find out much psi you need to start it.You can probaly look in your manual or just make a few calls. My truck had 55 psi and it ran fine i just had to get it running first.Good luck.I wonder if that fuel pressure regulator was a waste of time like it was for me.
