Why won't my van start or spark/turnover

You probably need a new battery. There is not enough capacity to turn the starter (which draws a lot of current); low current-drawing accessories (lights, radio, horn) will still work until the battery is flat out dead.

What causes intermittent starting?

sounds like a parasitic load on your battery. it will drain voltage from your battery continuously at a slow rate so while car is sitting over night it is drained but when you get it started in day the alternator is able to maintain battery voltage. could be something as simple as a visor light not turning off when closed or glove box light not turning off when closed or alarm system drawing excessive power.

My 2000 Nissan Maxima will not turnover at all. I tried to jump it off, cleaned the battery posts, and still nothing. The interior lights have dimmed but all the electrical components work : seats radio...

It could relate to the starter being no good in general or the alternator not being good at all either. you can have both tested at local autozones or advanced auto places. More then likely it has to do with the starter. should be an easy fix if you have any expeirience with automotives. usually comes down to three bolts and a bunch of awkward angles.

I have a 2002 dodge intrepid se 2.7 with 105012 miles. when i first replaced the battery with a new one,the car started, but i would hear a knocking under the hood.I drove it about 10 miles and i started to...

The knocking and grinding is not a good sign for the engine itself.

If the starter tries to start a seized engine, it will click and not turnover.

The engine may have to be overhauled or replaced with another.

Car wont start. its not the battery because its new.

Well even a new battery can be drained down is you have something on all the time, in about an hour.

So start with checking for a drain.
Remove the battery cables in order to clean and grease them.
Then only put one on.
With everything off if you jump the gap of the cable that is off to the battery, with a test light, is should not light up. If it does, then you have a constant drain that will kill a batter over night.
You have to check for things like interior light, and disconnect everything, one at a time, to pin it down.

If you don't have a drain, then the next thing is to check continuity.
When you turn the ignition on, first the dash indicators come on.
The battery should read 12.5 volts.
Then you try to crank it.
The voltage should drop to 10 while cranking, and come back up after.
If it does not drop to 10, the starter is blocked and not drawing.
It could be the neutral safety switch, so try in neutral instead of park.
It could also be the ignition switch.
Use a test light to see of the small wire plugged into the starter solenoid (the small cylinder on top of the starter), get power when keyed to starter?
If it does not, then ignition switch or neutral safety switch.
If yes, then starter solenoid is probably bad.
But try turning the engine over at the alternator by hand or wrench, and try again. Could be binding between starter and drive plate.

Once you get it started, then rev the engine up and verify alternator goes over 14 volts, to recharge battery.
Otherwise battery will go dead in a day.

New starter, alt, and battery but battery drains over night boost car and runs all day next day no start. manual transmission so i roll down hill and it starts but not when battery is totally dead

there are not a lot of computers that could be causing the drain, so baring any aftermarket accessories you should start searching for an indirect short to power

prop hood and leave the doors open... this is important because you do not want to wake the computers once you start your test

next, unplug the negative battery cable and insert a DVOM in series

drain should be less than 80mA after 30-90 minutes

if drain is higher, start pulling fuses until the drain is isolated

Chevy tahoe won't turnover, power to everything, no clicking in starter to indicate that it is the starter, nothing happens when you turn the key? any sugg My problem is similar. My 2003 4wd will start...

Next time it won't start turn headlights on and see if they dim when you turn key to start, if they dim its most likely starter, if they don't dim possible starter switch, Have you tried to start it in neutral position? Try that, if it starts in neutral than its park neutral switch, if not could be starter switch, Just make sure you chk. all fuses and any relays associated with ignition first.

My 1997 Dodge Avenger's engine won't start

Try cam and/or crank sensor. If crank to cam timing isn't detected properly it'll crank all day but won't start. I had similar problem on my 2.5L V6 Avenger....drove home fine, no engine light, next morning it cranked, but wouldn't start. The crank sensor was faulty.
