It looks like a split rear seat, 1/3 -- 2/3. The catches would be in the boot, upper left and right. Regs dictate it can't be done sitting in the seat.
the heads on escorts are alluminum, and they will crack, or blow a head gasket fairly easy, if the engine overheats bad, but you will have to remove the head, and have the head checked for warpage, and or cracks in it, once the head and gasket is replaced, the motor oil and oil filter will definitely have to be changed, before you drive it, hope that this information has helped you.
normally its the engine head, most likely its in the other side of the head to the timing belt. it will have two wires coming out of it and held in by two screws.
you can fit a zvh engine which is a 1800cc zetech block with a 1600cc rs turbo head bolted on and will fir in without too much trouble or a standard 1800cc zetech engine will go in
2lt overhead cam with them horrible tappet adjusters,cast iron head but valves dont hit the head if the timing belt breaks ,but it does on the 1600 .called a pinto in america .Remember the assembly line well ,have many a fond memory of working on it and the staff canteen on night shift ,what lovely grub we got.Head bolt torque is about 80lbs because i used to pull them down to check them after the machine had tightened them up
not to scare you but it sounds like the head is cracked i had the same issue.but it can in deed be the water pump.as far as the water level maybe it hasent used what is already in the motor yet so it hasent called for more from the reserve tank.
If you crank or start he engine and the antifreeze blows out for the radiator it is due to blown head gasket pushing cyl. compression into the cooling system. The head will have to come off.
