The failure to start is probably a protective measure to avoid seriously damaging the engine in the case of pump failure but the pump may not be at fault, you may have a failed oil pressure sensor.
The sensors fails more often than the pumps unless your vehicle is very high mileage.
I suggest having the sensor replaced first by someone you trust. If the light is still on, then the problem gets much more expensive.
