My 1998 ford explorer will not move while in reverse or drive, it will slowly move if i step down kinda on it, but wont fully go, but it works first and second gear on the last spots on the automatic gear shifter on the dash, then as i go about 30 or 35 mph, i drop it down in drive and it engages, and no fifth gear? what could this be, replacing the transmission the answer? i imagine so

It appears to have history. A bit worrying you say 'kinda changed the filter and fluid'. Most are sealed for life, and the amount of fluid is critical. If you drain, you measure what comes out and replace with the same amount of the right type of ATF.
I tried
the DIY service and repair manuals from a website and it actually helped me repair transmission problem in my ford explorer. it wont move forward or reverse, engine is good both solenoids for forward and reverse work.
I don't have much technical knowledge but I just followed it step-wise, and works perfect! got it from www.reliable-store.com

It is possible that the shift linkage is out of adjustment and is going into neutral and not making it to Reverse, try moving the gear selector slowly from park, through reverse to Neutral, and see if it will go into reverse somwhere in between. If this does not work ,you may have Reverse gear failure, a common problem with explorer/ranger transmissions. unfortunatly it requires rebuilding the transmission
Sometimes it may just be the fluid level, if you have drive , drive it around the block a few times, then park it on level ground and hold the brake and go through all the gears slowley, two times. put it in park, open the hood and check the fluid level, the dip stick in the back by the fire wall, take it out and clean it, read the stick. SOME need to be checked in Nutral, if this is the case do so but be carefull that the truck has stopped moving when put in nutral!!! if it is low only put in the right fluid, and a little at a time, while it is still running DO NOT OVER FILL !!!!!!!! Also sometimes it is a SENSOR problem, and in most cases not to hard or costly to replace.
