You get at the starter from underneath. It is always between the engine and transmission, pointing one way or the other. I believe it is on the front side of the engine. Remember to remove the battery cable first. You can check if the starter really is bad, (instead of the ignition switch or neutral safety switch), by jumping the solenoid at the starter. But be very careful that it is in neutral, parking brake on, and wheel chocked, because you will be underneath.
Well you hit all the major ones, could be crank position sensor, ignition module, a bad coil pack (it should have 3), you need to check that you have spark to each plug while the engine is turning over (!!!be careful as this will hurt if you get shocked!!!), this will rule out coil packs. if you have no spark to any plug your looking at a bad ingnition module (which is what the coil packs bolt to). Hope this gets you on the right track!
Sometimes it is easier to loosen wiper motor assembly and move it out of the way, then remove upper engine mounts "they look like a dog bone" and rock the engine forward.
turn off radio.disconnect the battery negative cable.safely raise and support vechicle on jack stands.on level and solid ground.then remove.fly wheel shield.label and disconnect the electrical connectors from starter.remove the starter to engine bolts and the starter.NOTE the 4.9L ENGINE YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE STARTER MOTOR SHIELD AND THE EXHAUST FRONT AND REAR PIPE ASSEMBLY.THEN VISA VERSA.INSTALL NEW STARTER.SHIM IF NECESSARY.
CHECK FOR FUEL AND SPARK FIRST. CHECK ALL THE CONNECTORS ON EVERYTHING, ESPECIALLY THE IGNITION MODULE CONNECTIONS. THE CRANK SENSOR OFF THE BACK OF THE ENGINE COMES UP ALONG THE FUEL LINES AND CONNECTS TO THE IGNITION MODULE.
in the front side of the seats (upper part) you might have to press hard and feel, there should be a sort of button press hard let someone help you to lift off the headrests,
Your transport has a 6 cylinder engine ( the only one available tor that year), so u need 6 spark plugs. They should come w/ the gap set, but u should check them to make sure they're gapped properly, at .060 for your van.
