Using a wide tipped removal tool, gently pry up at the solid areas of your wheel cover, in between the openings. WARNING: Do not use a common screw driver, as this will crack the edge of your cap. You can however, use two wide tip screw drivers at the same time to spread out the pressure, lessening the possibility of cracks. For flat type center caps, a screw driver does work best. for the deeper type wheel caps, you will need the removal tool.

No idea without seeing it ,if it made a pop sound as you describe it ?? well this to me sounds like a timing belt failure and it wont turn over because the engine is locked as the valves are open , and crunched into the piston ,, without a good look under the bonnet i cannot be more helpful sorry .. Please ask a local mechanic to have a look for you and post at a later date what the problem is ,, be interested to know ? The fast idle part is confusing me though but it could have a cam sensor ?? and the belt was worn and jumped a tooth before it broke causing the timing to be out ?' hence the fast idle -

if you still have the belts , the size is printed on the back of the belt for example --A 1975 and then further on you will see something like A36
the first letter denotes the belt section (A, B,C) for the pulleys in use
The last denotes the batch that that belt came from
It is called a matching number and is critical where multiple belts on same pulleys are used
If you need 2 or more belts , it is essential that all belts come from the same molding or their lengths although all the same by the marking will have slight differences that will make it impossible to properly tension all belts

Under your hood, look a the radiator support on top. there should be a sticker there. If not, go to AutoZone.com. They have a section called Znet. Just put in the infor, and it will show you a diagram.

Check and see if the pulleys are shiny looking, also are the batteries low on charge, if you have more than one battery the load on the alt is huge, add in a low or bad set of batteries and then the belt can deliver enough power to spin the alternator, and it slips. Worked on motorhomes for year's, saw this allot.
