My procedure removing front shocks:

  • Before I raise the car and place on jack stands, I loosen the top nut on the strut bearing. If you don't have an air gun to remove the nut there are tools available from online tool shops. A 1/2" drive breaker bar is attached on top of the tool while an allen wrench seen in the middle counter acts the by holding the strut in place.

Tool without the allen to use as a counter act, used with a regular L allen wrench.

  • Remove bolts that secure the swaybar to the control arm.

  • With a automatic center punch tool, mark three reference points on the lower control arm ball joint flange (not on control arm. This will help line up the ball joint to the control arm without messing alignment putting back together.
  • Remove the 3 bolts that secure the ball joint to the control arm and wiggle out the ball joint and the wheel bearing housing away from the control arm.
  • Remove the large bolts that secure the strut to the wheel bearing assembly, this will somewhat loosen the hold on the strut.
  • With a long pry bar or a long pipe wedged on the control arm, position it when the time comes you need to counter act downwards.
  • On the wheel bearing assembly where the strut is buried, there will be a slot which you need a 1/4" drive extension attached to a 1/4" ratchet wedged into the slot.
  • Crank the ratchet slowly until it spreads the slot securely and wide enough to release the strut assembly.
  • With the strut separated from bearing assy. secure the strut from dropping and loosen the top nut above the strut bearing, remove strut from vehicle.
I don't know how far you want assistance but if need further info just let me know.

How do I chnage the front and rear shocks in a 2001 4.0

The shocks in the rear just unbolt top and bottom, disconnect the air line and replace them.

Struts are used in the front. You'll need to remove them and then have a spring compressor to change the struts. An alignment check is recommended after the struts are replaced.

2001 Golf auto won't change from 1st gear while engine is still cold. Once warmed up, changes effortlessly.

I had a BMW with this problem. Try changing the transmission fluid/filter, if this doesn't what you are going to have to do is remove the valve body (which is normally under the fuel filter) and clean it out. If you are mechanically inclined this isn't too hard a job if you have a haynes manual for you car. But this is a serious job if you don't know what you are doing.

I have a problem with releasing the plastic covering in order to change the spark plugs and ignition coils . Do I pull quite hard or is there a release mechanism

Pop off those little plastice caps about the size of a dime, I think there are three or four of them. Under those caps are 10mm nuts that need to be removed. Then it lifts right off.

Golf gt tdi 2.0 140 bhp mk 5 - esp light

When there's something wrong with the brake pressure that handbrake warning light comes on.

The ESP warning light could be caused by a lot of things, but most likely it's a dirty fuel filter. Don't take my word for it though, just go to the VW dealer and have it read the faultcodes from the ECU, which should point you/them in the right direction.

Alternatively, when you have the right equipment (= VAGCOM + cable) and knowledge, you or a friend yould diagnose the ECU yourself.

From the sounds of it, you'll need a small service (air filter and oil filter change, etc.) anyways. Don't forget to reset the ECU (or dis- and reconnect the battery) afterwards to erase the faultcode from memory (when there's still something wrong, it'll return soon enough).

You might get lucky with a small service :)
