I have a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 HD that stalls and stutters when driving down the road, it does it randomly and only occaisionally. It did it one time recently and completely died and would not start. I am thinking it might be the fuel pump, but I don't want to pay $150 for a fuel pressure tester. Any Ideas? Also I was going to change the fuel filter, but it doesn't have one.
You should be able to buy one for around $60 at a auto parts store and recommend using one. However he next time the truck wont start, turn the switch to the on position and listen for the humm of the pump energizing. If you hear nothing, check the pump relay by swapping it with another. Often times the relay next to it will be the same type. If the relay is good, the pump will most likely need to be replaced. If you hear the pump energize but it still wont start, put on a pair of safety glasses and go to the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Depress it to see if fuel will squirt out of it with pressure behind it. If comes out with very little pressure the pump or fuel pressure regulator could be bad. If it comes out with higher pressure it still doesn't rule out the pump because some vehicles required a exact amount of pressure to start. For instance, if your vehicle calls for 35 psi and your pumps output is 29 psi it may not start. If after trying everything I said and it still doesnt start, you may want to get the fuel gauge to eleminate this possibility or have your ignition coil tested.

The fuel pump works, it will start and run fine sometimes, the problem is very intermittent in nature. I have been told it could still be the fuel pump, I just hate to spend $400 on a new fuel pump if that is not the real issue. Could it be a bad coil, if so how do I test them? But I can turn on the key and hear the pump engage, I can also start it most of the time, I have just had issues the one time with it starting? I need a good starting point?
