It sounds like your serpentine belt may be slipping due to a weak tensioner. If the belt is tight then the alternator is going out. This is not normal!

I have not heard so. i would think it would have some thing to do with the belt slipping, or alternator-brushes floating,at higher RPM,s it is most likely a indecision the alternator ,maybe needing service, some time soon , unless it if a problem for you i would wait until it happens more often ,but start looking for a good deal on a new alt,or rebuilt. hope this is helpful please let us know . you can git the charging system tested for free at most Auto Zone stores. have a good day .

1999 mercury cougar battery keeps going dead. we pulled the battery sensor fuse and the light went off on the tester

Is the battery being recharged by the alternator?
Meaning, is the alternator putting out 13.5 volts or better, when reved up?

If not, then it is the alternator.
If it is, then the battery probably has in internal short that drains or prevent full recharge.

The one other alternative is that something is on all the time overhight, such as a trunk light. You can tell that by removing a battery terminal cable, and checking for 12 volts across the gap with a test light. Don't just use a voltmeter, because the radio may have a tiny drain to hold station memory. And don't remove a battery cable until after you consider things like radio antitheft mechanisms and codes.
