Same thing as the Chev. Check the dip switch on the combination switch. Also sheck reverse light switch by removeing the connector and jumping. Do the same check for the stop lights be it pressure or contact switch.
Yes, headlights are fully adjustable but adjustment must comply with the respective road ordinance. Inquire where you can have the lights set to the legal requirements.
If you are replacing the entire headlight assembly click here instead: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4494437 Even though this one is for a Jetta, the Golf is similary enough - I replaced my wife's headlights in her Golf using this exact same tutorial.
Good luck, and if this helped, please rate my answer!
Yes, replace this. I know that sounds like an ultra simple explanation to solve your problem, but that's it. The turn signal, combination headlight dim/bright switch, is bad. This part is going to be a dealer item. Thought I would warn you before you see the price!
Place the car on level ground approx 3metres away from a blank wall or similar. Measure the distance from the ground to centre of headlight and mark this height on the wall. Turn on dipped beam and you should see a pattern that has a straight vertical line that slopes up at about 45 degrees. Adjust the headlights so the staight portion of line is approx 10mm below the line marked on the wall. That is close enough to be legal. Then get them checked at local garage.
The wiring is different, if your Golf had headlights with H4 bulbs then changing to high beam turns dip off. The GTi has separate dip and high lights, on high beam dip stays on (all 4 bulbs on).
