This happened to me. Just turn the key and wait 10 mins then turn off and back on. You can do this more than once. I had to do it for about a month or less, but after that that light just stays on, but the car starts with no problems now.

Turn your key to the on position and leave it until the security light stops blinking, im pretty sure it's about 10 minutes. Once it has stopped blinking, turn the key back to the off position and then try and start. but keep in mind that this will only work that time. Chances are this will come back. If you don't mind having your security light on all the time, then try this. It's a cheap fix compared to the 500 a dealership will charge you.

It maybe a cheap fix but when you need to be somewhere, you don't always have 10 mins to sit and wait. We deal with this issue everyday. It gets very annoying. I don't understand why the consumer has to pay to have this security feature disabled. I will not attempt to correct this myself. As a family of 6 we have bought several cars either Honda and Toyotas with NO PROBLEMS. We have not bought a American made car in years and most likely probable never will. The Alero only has 120,000 miles and the money I have spent on this car in the last 4 months totals more than I have spent on the other 5 cars we own in the past 2 years.

Sounds like a problem with the security. It immobilizes the fuel injector circuit when the security is on.

Try this: turn key to on, and wait several minutes (up to 30 minutes) to see if light stops blinking. If it does stop, turn key back off, then try to start it. If the security light goes off, it may have reset. If it does not stop blinking or staying on steady, the dealer will charge outrageous prices to fix it-possibly over $800. Google "passlock bypass" or "passkey bypass" or "VATS bypass" to see your options. A site called newrockies sells a module (about $200) that forever bypasses the whole security system.

1997 oldsmobile 88 won't start the security light

Im guessing you tried to bypass the key in the ignition/steering column. This is ok unless the actual problem was in the TDM (theft deterrent module) In this case, the 2 wire bypass does nothing. There is another way to bypass this. Check out this link for tons of info and some DO IT YOURSELF options. Ive done several key bypasses and tons of full bypasses. They both work well, it just depends on what part is failing. I think you need the full bypass to eliminate that TDM.

When you try to start my 99 Alero the security light starts blinking and it will not start. The light blinks for about ten to twelve minutes before going off.

The Problem is your VATS security system. I just fixed this in my 96 regal 3 days ago. You can go the cheap way, and bypass the key. (link #1) or spend 200 bucks and rip that whole garbage system out of your car. (link 2) I bypassed my key, worked for about a year till the computer part started failing. then i just did a full rip out.

When I turn my ignition to the start positon the headlights and the dash lights come on but no crank the security light is blinking but not to sure if that is the issue I think it could be my starter,...

if the security light is blinking, it's the VATS system not recognizing the resister pill in the key. I currently have the same non start issue, but I bypassed the VATS ignition key but the car still doesn't start. My security light acts like it should. It comes on when the key is inserted and goes off after 5 seconds. If it blinks, it's not seeing the right value.

Google VATS system bypass. Resistors cost me about 3 bucks at radioshack.

2004 Alero. Car turns over, but won't start. Security light blinks.

Hey jonce17....I had the same problem, and my Alero sat in my driveway for 2 days. I looked online for the solution, and I found out how to bypass the security. After it won't start and the security light is blinking, turn the ignition to the on position. Leave it there till the security light stops blinking and stays on (usually takes 9 to 10 minutes). Then turn ignition to off position and start it like normal. This happens to me about once every couple of months. Hope this helps....

For some reasons the bypass is not working, so you need the key to be recognized by the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) before the fuel enable signal to the PCM can be activated.
There is a great DIY way of bypassing the VATS system entirely, including the TDM (that goes faulty very often with the age of the car). You can find the write-up here: http://newrockies.ca/vatsbypass
