Loud whining upon startup, especially when cold. Thought it was in power steering since it's very loud when turning the steering wheel. Had steering checked out; he assured me power steering was fine-thought it was the air compressor. I need more info before I decide what to do. Thanks

I never had this noise til recently and have owned the car for several years. From people I asked, was told that it sounded like compressor for suspension.
Firestone mechanic checked power steering fluid; pump etc and assured me that was not the problem.

I don't want to spend big $ unless I know it's worth fixing and will make the car (1995) worth keeping. I love this car!

power steering on fords are inherently loud. louder if fluid is low. check the fluid to make sure its at correct level on stick. take a long bladed screwdriver, touch metal end to ps pump (or a/c comp) put handle to you ear and it will act like a stethoscope (or use a real mechanics stethoscope) should be able to tell where the noise is coming from with that

If it is the suspension compressor, you can find out by turning off the air suspension switch in the trunk. if the noise goes away, that's it. they are very expensive, but a lot a people ride around with faulty air springs. just makes a lowrider

I would try changing the belt. It may be dry and cracked. It will cause whining/squealing sounds. It also will get tension when the steering is turned. It could still be the compressor bearings. The pulley on the compressor still turns when the compressor is off it just don't engage. but i would not change the compressor first.

Loud whining noise especially on exceleration in 2010 Mazda Tribute

A loud whining noise on acceleration in a 2010 Mazda Tribute could be a sign of a few different issues. Here are some potential causes:
  1. Power steering pump: A whining noise can be an indication of a failing power steering pump. The noise may increase when the steering wheel is turned.
  2. Alternator: If the whining noise increases with engine speed, the alternator may be failing. This is because the alternator is responsible for charging the battery and powering the car's electrical system.
  3. Transmission: A whining noise during acceleration could also be a sign of transmission issues, such as low transmission fluid levels, worn bearings, or a damaged gear.
  4. Differential: A whining noise that increases with speed could also be a sign of a failing differential. This is the part of the car that transfers power from the engine to the wheels.
It's important to have a professional mechanic diagnose and fix the issue to prevent further damage to your vehicle.

There is a loud whining coming from the motor

Hi Tyler:
Try using a mechanics stethescope (or a dowel sound rod, thumb over end held against your ear) and with the engine running, touch various components. You will hear different sounds, and hopefully be able to isolate the whine.
CAUTION - Work Safe - moving bits can make the sound rod hurt you.
I'd be guessing at an alternator bearing as they whine worse than a puppy on the wrong side of a door.
Cheers

Loud humming noise when starting up, worse when cold, also when turn wheels, is this possible power steering pump or bearing in pulley?

If the power steering fluid is low, the pump will hum/whine as it will draw air into the system. If the fluid level is ok, possible internal pump issue

Upon starting a loud whining sound as you accelerate - cause$

Belts slipping . Or bearings on water pump . Spray some belt dressing on main drive belt a see if it changes or goes away. If so change the belt , easy to do. If not then it's a new water pump needed

There is a loud "whining"

Power steering pumps whine when they are low on fluid, or if they are goin bad. Serpentine belts also whine in cold weather or when they are goin bad. Tru spraying just a little WD40 on the belts when its running, if it goes away, you should be thinking about a new belt. If nothing changes, check the power steering fluid, if its full, take to a mechanic

Power steering pump is whining, I replaced it and the new one whines just as loud. what could be wrong

make sure your using power steering fluid recommended for the vehicle. If automatic transmission fluid it aerates causing bubbles. It's very similar to the effect of shaking a bottle of liquid detergent vigorously when half full. Having that much air in the system can cause it to whine very loudly and reduce the life of the pump.
