1998 Contour no start

98 Contour, starter ticks like dead battery and wipers cycle a couple of times when I turn the key to start. Wiper switch is in the off position, battery is fully charged. I would think possible starter failure except for the wiper thing. (revised) The starter has been removed and tested, and is fine. The wiper switch is in the off position. I have some mechanic background, have never run across this problem before. I have replaced the ignition with a known good, still have the same problem. PLEASE if you have a suggestion (such as maybe the wiper switch is on) post as a clarification request, not a solution, as this removes me from the queue. ok if you have the answer, not so much if you do not.

I hadn't, because it is a relatively new one. Once you suggested it, I did, indeed, pull it out and have it tested. It seems to be fine. Low battery wouldn't cause the wipers to cycle, at least not to my knowledge.

have you actually tested the battery? just because the battery seems to be charged it may still go open under a laod, trust me on this. do a load test on the battery, the symptoms you are discribing are for a low battery voltage condition.

Weird hey!
-solenoid o.k?
-continuity through positive battery cable?
-have you checked for ground faults?

This is the exact problem I'm having on my 98 contour. My trusted mechanic says these symptoms do indeed indicate low voltage, in my case jump starting will get it running, but only for a few seconds. this leads us to a bad cable. The ignition coil's lead is attached to the starter solenoid's power terminal to which the large cable from the bat + is also attached. If the cable between the starter and battery is bad then the ignition coil doesn't get enough voltage from the battery.

This is funny, had the exact problem this morning. Tried to star the car. The engine just "ticks", the wiper goes, and the "pling-pling" sound that generally tells me to close the door/fasten belt sways in its frequency, like a dying battery. However, I have no idea what caused this.
I suspect the long wait in the sun-baked drive-in line somehow melted a cable. While in the drive-in line I believe i did smell a faint smell of burnt rubber/plastic..

there are 3 class fuses
hot all the time battery +
hot only keyon.
and hot only in the mode of use , like a crank fuse.
no engine size told as that too dictates what fuse box it has.
ok later post wipers dead. (hot wired not)
I will now read the service manual to you.,
fuse f5 is 20amps wipers in JB box.
F5, pin 9 and 10 are hot only key one or accessory on
if F5 has no power the key switch is shot or hacked or wire to it missing(damaged etc)
wiper set to high sends full power directly to the front wiper motor.
super super easy wiring here,. no BCM to mess up.

1998 ford contour battery drains over night and wipers come on when jumping

Check for battery drain with wiper fuse/relay pulled and with it re-installed. Sounds like the multi-switch or wiper switch has a bad wire or shorted circuit.
Any garage can check for a power drain very easily. don-ohio (:^)

1998 dodge caravan my battery was dead and after replacing it my panel lights are blinking window wiper and washer bottoms below radio

Same problem with my 98 grand caravan! Turn heater on high with air directional toward your face. Press & hold top back wiper button & bottom back wiper button (1 button between) until all buttons light up. Release buttons. Then it will go thru reset process. After a few mins. If top button is still lit up, repeat steps again. Found instructions written in back of my manual. Worked like a charm!

Clicking or ticking sound coming from the rear

sounds like a malfunctioning relay in the wiper controls and youd better get that battery charged back up before it freezes and the water in it turns to ice.. it will kill that battery really quick..

Where is the fuse that control my wipers located in the fuse box

The wipers do not have a separate fuse, the wiper motor has a built in circuit breaker, this is for safety reasons. The common causes of inop wipers is a defective switch on the steering column and a defective wiper control relay in the Power Distribution Box located under the hood, it is marked "R15". If the relay clicks when you turn the wipers on then likely the wiper motor is defective.

Problem with our 1998 Ford Contour windshield wiper. It stopped working - not sure why. Checked on the motor...working. Problem could be the switch. Checked the fuses under the steering wheel...none...

If the motor is running then the fuse shouldnt be the problem, iv had problems in the past where the tensioning spring that keeps the blade against the window is too tight and has seized the wiper, turn on the wipers and lift the wipers gently and drop them back into place a few times, a few gentle nudges wont hurt,
Hope this helps,
Sion.

Replaced fuse, windshield wiper motor, link assembly, and still wont work in 98 lincoln navigator

The only thing left is the wiper switch. Check for power at the wiper motor when in low position (should be a green or white with green tracer wire). Also check the connection at the base of the steering column for the wiper switch.

The intermittent function for the wipers has a variable resistor that controls the timing of the wipers in this mode. Replacement of the wiper switch will resolve this issue. Over time they do become worn, and do not make contact during the entire wiper cycle.

If you turn the key and you hear a click and the motor is not moving your starter is probably bad. Everything can work on your car and the starter can be bad all by itself.
Check and see if your wiper is inthe correct position, sometimes we accidently move it without knowing.

AC & Rear wiper switch button indicator lights blink

The procedure for re-setting the HVAC control panel on a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan follows:
With ignition on but not running
1. turn knob to air vents
2. turn fan knob to ON
3. temperature setting on COLD (2X) {I have dual temp controls}
4. hold top(rear wiper) and bottom (rear wiper with wash) buttons pressing down together until all the buttons cycle through (this will require 1 to 2 minutes of continuous pressing)
I learned this from a very helpful local Dodge service adviser
