It's nearly time to install the new brake pads. But there's one more step to complete before you can do that. You have to manually retract the caliper piston.
If you look at the inside of the caliper you'll see a cylindrical piston coming out -- this part pushes on the inboard side of the brake pad. You'll see that it has adjusted itself to match your worn-out pads, so you'll need to reset the piston to its original position before the caliper, along with your new (and thicker) brake pads, will fit over the rotor.

Before you reset the caliper piston, it's a good idea to remove the cap that covers the brake fluid reservoir. If you don't, you'll be fighting against a significant amount of brake fluid pressure.
Now that the reservoir cap is removed, this is the part where you'll need that C-clamp. Place the end with the screw on it against the piston. You can use a small piece of wood to protect the surface of the piston, if you choose. As you turn the screw, the clamp will increase the pressure on the piston. Keep tightening it until you're able to slip the new pads into the caliper and fit the caliper and the new pads over the brake rotor.
If you find that the piston isn't properly retracting, don't force it. You may have a caliper that's been designed with a piston that slowly turns as it extends. If that's the case, then you'll need a special tool to thread the piston back into the caliper. A brake caliper tool -- a tool specifically designed to retract this type of brake caliper piston -- is available for purchase at most auto parts stores. If you can't find one there, then you can order the tool online -- or if you're really lucky, maybe your neighbor will have one that you can borrow for the afternoon.
Once the brake caliper piston has been fully retracted, you can re-cap the brake fluid reservoir. It's not a good idea to leave the cap off of your brake fluid reservoir for any longer than is absolutely necessary. Debris or even water may find its way into your brake's hydraulic system. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means that it absorbs and retains water. Water in the brake lines leads to serious safety concerns and more complex repairs than the relatively simple pad replacement that you're finishing up with right now.
Installing the new brake pads themselves is just a simple matter of slipping the new pads into the slots where you found the old ones. If they don't easily fit in with your hands, you may want to tap them in gently with a hammer or rubber mallet. Then, replace the pins or bolts that held them in place and you're nearly done.
Next, move the caliper back into position on the brake rotor. Make sure it fits snugly, and tighten the bolts that hold the caliper in place. Make sure everything is back in place and then give the brake pedal a few pumps from inside your car just to make sure the pedal feels right to you. It may take several pumps of the pedal to get the brakes to properly seat themselves into their new position.
The rest of the brake repair is easy. Put the wheel back on, tighten the lug nuts, remove the jack stands and lower the car to the ground using your jack. It's just like changing a tire. Remember to fully tighten (and properly torque) the lug nuts once you have the vehicle back on the ground.
Also, don't forget to test drive the car to make sure that your brake work was successful. Fixing brakes is one thing; making sure they work properly is another.

both ,push in and turn at the same time ,difficult single handed but with a G clamp?? and snap on water pump pliers to turn it with its a fiddly job but not too difficult ,have you found your chassis number yet??? took me ages to find ---in the boot on the cross member under the floor

2002 Ford Excursion 7.3 4x4 rear brakes getting smoking hot. Noticed it on driver side first. Assumed the rotor was sticking, replaced it and the hose. Relaxed pads and found the pads on passenger side...

There are a number of issues that can cause overheating disc brakes. Disc brakes, when released, separate from the disc by the action of the rotor moving between them (since no rotor is perfectly true, there is a small about of wobble and it pushes the pads away from the rotor surface). Things that can cause this to go wrong are:

  1. Caliper pistons that have rust rings that cause sticking. This most often will happen right after or shortly after replacing old, work out pads with new ones. Because the caliper piston was extended out farther with the worn pads, its surface may get rusty. This rust can cause sticking when the piston is pushed back into the bore with the new, thicker pads.
  2. Caliper slide bolts will rust and get sticky, not allowing the caliper to release properly and re-center itself on the rotor. What you often see here is that one pad (inner or outer) is totally worn out and the other seems normal.
  3. Rusty brake lines/caliper internals can cause restrictions in the flow of brake fluid and hold pressure after the brake pedal is released.
It is highly recommended that whenever you change your brake pads, you replace the caliper slide bolts use a new brake hardware kit when reinstalling. The additional cost is almost always saved in longer brake pad life, and fewer complications.

2009 town and country rear brake caliper does not come off

Sure it does

Only rust & the lip worn into the rotor from the brake
pads,holding it on

Grind down some of the out step & rust on the rotor you
can get to ,with an electric or air powered tool & sanding
disc

Then use a small pry bar or old screw driver in the caliper
& behind the pads to push the piston in some,then the pads
will clear the rotor

You will have to not only push in the piston to make room
for new pads,but screw in the piston if you have an internal
parking brake,open the bleeder also to make it easier

How do i get the calippers of to get old pads out and new ones in

front brake pads replacement you need only usually wrench set, inclusive 7 mm allen key also. But for rear brake pads replacement you need obligatory a special caliper piston pressing tool, in order to press back rear caliper piston with parking brake automatic adjustment!!!
For front brake pads. You should buy the brake pads (with wear sensor). For change front brake pads you must raise vehicle, remove wheels, extract the retaining spring of the caliper, and remove the caliper as follow:
1. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper, and do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose!
2. Remove top and bottom caps (on back side of the caliper) for access to guide pins, then unbolt and remove them from the brake carrier. Remove the caliper.
3. Now you must thoroughly clean the brake calipers (free of grease).
4. Remove outer brake pad from brake carrier.
5. Pull inner brake pad out of brake caliper piston.
6. Check up the brake fluid level on the reservor, and emptying if neccessary!
7. Push piston back into brake caliper housing.
8. Install inner brake pad (with expanding spring) in brake caliper piston. (Arrow marked on pad - if exist, must point in direction of brake disc rotation when vehicle is moving forward).
9. Install outer brake pad into brake carrier.
10. Bolt brake caliper housing to brake carrier using two guide pins. Tightening torque is 25 Nm.
11. Install both caps.
12. Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing. Important: Depress the brake pedal firmly several times while the car is stationary so that the brake pads adjust to their normal operating positions!!! Check brake fluid level and top up if neccessary!!!

wheel off remove 2 caliper bolts from behind caliper then remove caliper @ replace your pads, you'll need a C clamp vise to compress the caliper piston back so you can put caliper back on. hope i helped!!

Renault trafic brake calipers on the front can be pushed in with a G-clamp, but rear calipers need to be wound in, if you look at the piston it has notches for a winding tool!

How to change front disc brake pads on 2000 Mazda Bravo B2500

jack up car, remove the road wheels, at the rear of the caliper you will have 2 or 3 bolts holding the caliper onto the stub axle, remove the bolts and remove the caliper, remove the outer pad, leave the inner pad in place and use a "G" clamp to compress the brake piston until it has bottomed, if this is not done the new pads will not fit back over the rotor as the piston is too far out and the new pads are thicker than the old ones.
place the new pads in the caliper and fit over the rotor, replace the 2 or 3 bolts that hold the caliper in place, replace the road wheel, tighten the nuts and lower the car to the ground, pump the brake pedal to see if you have brakes, if you do have brakes take it for a test drive away from any traffic if possible

Unable to install the outer pad - does the calibar slide on the two retaining bushings?? The new pads seem to be thicker and the auto parts store tell us we have the correct pads

new pads are thicker thats why your changing them,
you need a large pair of channel lock pliers and you push the piston back in the caliber,this will push the fluid back up to the master cylinder,don't get nervous if you see it running over,when you are done installing the brakes,remember to pump the brake pedal until you get a full pedal,when you have your full pedal then you can start it up,

Change the brakes on 2007 sport trac

it has front and rear disc brakes, disc brakes are very simple to change out. Most disc brakes have two bolts that hold them on, one on the bottom one on the top on the inside of the brake caliper, they may be an allen head, or just a bolt. Remove them counter-clockwise. After you remove the two bolts, lift up and away on the caliper and the whole assembly will come off. Once you pull the assembly off you will see the two pads, one of them is driven by a piston, the other one is fixed. Remove the fixed one, they just pop off (have little metal clips you may have to slide the pad off). Take a C-clamp or something comparable to squeeze with, place it on the back of the caliper and on the old pad thereby squeezing the cylinder back into the piston, once you squeeze the cylinder back into the piston, it will give you room needed for thicker new brake pads. Piston should retract with the c-clamp fairly easy, shouldn't be a whole lot of resistance. Remove c-clamp after you get it to retract and remove old pad. Put new pad on, just like you took the old ones off. All four are basically the same to change out, they all have two bolts holding them on. You pull those, get the pistons to retract and replace the worn pads, put them back on, line up holes, put bolts back in... and your good to go. When you get back in the car and turn the key on, you may have to pump the brakes a few times.

remove 2 caliper bolts, remove old pads. put new pads in there place, before installing the caliper, be sure to squeeze the piston back in the caliper otherwise it will not fit back over the new pads. than replace the caliper and the 2 mounting bolts.
