2006 Mazda Tribute. Check engine light came on, code stated the Neutral Safety Switch was bad. We replaced the switch, but now while driving, the vehicle "search" for which forward gear it wants to be in. It'll jump from 2nd to 1st, sometimes into neutral, sometimes takes off in 2nd, etc. I'm thinking the NSS was installed in the wrong position, and needs to be adjusted properly. Any advice on how to do this? Or what else the problem might be?

possible but it can also be a range selecter switch problem. any work done on vehicle lately? pleas respone and i will try my best to help thanks.
SOURCE: auto transmission will not engage in DRIVE gear when starting.
IT IS THE STRAINER INSIDE THE PAN IN THE TRANSMISSION,WHEN ITS COOL THE FLUID IS TO THICK TO TRAVEL AND GRITTY TO GO THROUGH THE STRAINER SCREEN,BUT WHEN THE TRANNY WARMS THE FLUID ITS THEN ABLE TO FLOW THROUGH THE SCREEN AND SHIFT PROPERLY.

It is in side the trans on top of the valve body. Why do you think you need to replace it?

Sounds like you have lost the transmission. There are bands that clamp down to lock the transmission into the gear you want. They are controlled by a hydrolic unit located in the trans. The first thing I would do is have a shop pull the trans oil pan and see if it is full of chips of metal. If so you definately have a problem. At the same time they can look at the bands and see if one of them is broken. another cause would be that metal has gotten into the hydrolic valve body and frozen the drive band portion so it will not function. You may also get lucky and have it be an internal adjustment of the drive band. Good Luck, RAC
The engine and
the automatic transmission in this vehicle are computer controlled
and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the
memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this,
such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must
be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the
system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner
tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a
trained technician is required to know what is correct and what
isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair
manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the
computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the
problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical
problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage
on the engine.
