SOURCE: how do you loosen the serpentine belt

remove air filter box completely. loosen o/s/f wheel. jack up the car, and secure. remove wheel. remove plastic shield to expose the cranckshaft pulley.check routing of the belt for replacement. on top of the tensioner there is a square, about 1/2 inch, place a bar in the square and gently push the bar towards the front of the car to release the tension, and remove the belt. change any defective pulleys. refit the belt leaving the top pulley till last.take up the tension of the tensioner, and then fit the remaining belt. make sure the belt is sitting right in it's grooves, and crank the engine first to make sure it is fitted ok. refit air box, plastic shield and wheel.

SOURCE: serpentine belt slips off idler pulley

The A/C pully is supposed to spin freely until the AC is activated to run.. The cranshaft pully does not. Replace the tensioner pully. The belt has to fit in between the grooves on the pullys.

How to replace the tention idler pulley

using a breaker bar or some other tool w/ 1/2'' drive, insert into idler, there is a square hole, remove belt tension, donot remove belt, but lift belt off say the alternator, it would help if you hang the belt w/ wire or something so as not to let it drop. using a 15mm wrench, remove mounting bolt to idler, remove idler. better to replace the entire ilder w/ pulley, as an assymbly, they wear out like any thing else. when istalling new idler, must be positioned correctly. theres a finger which protrudes out of idler, this must be inserted @ engine sideof idler. reinstall bolt, tighten, reposition belt, using breaker bar 1/2" drive again, remove belt tension, so you can get belt over alternator pulley, release tension , done ! make sure belt is centered, and on properly according to belt rounting. when satisfied w/installation , start engine, check your work, remember to visulize existing idler, etc., etc., before you start this so you can put on the new one on exactly the way the old one was !!!!!!!!!!1

I have a 2008 Kia Sorento LX 3.3. where is the adjuster bolt for the idler pulley? Trying to change serpentine belt and idler pulley.

The idler pulley deflects out of the way using a special wrench, the pulley is held against the belt only by a preset spring tension mechanism. You put the wrench on the bolt or in the square drive hole and deflect the pulley away from the belt, it must be manually held there to put the new belt on and then released to tension the new belt.

How to change alternator belt

914d651.gif
alternator and air conditioning compressor
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the idler pulley bolt.

The replacement of the inner belt on multi-belted engines may require the removal of the outer belts.
To replace a drive belt, loosen the adjusting and mounting bolts of the component which the belt is driving. Move the component inward to relieve the tension on the drive belt.
Slip the belt off the component pulley and match the new belt with the old belt for length and width. The old belt will be slightly longer. After a new belt is installed correctly, adjust the tension.
  1. Turn the adjustment bolt at the top of the idler pulley bracket. Clockwise rotation will tighten the belt; counterclockwise will loosen it.
  2. Keep the idler pulley bolt snug (but not tight) while adjusting belt tension. The adjustment bolt should turn with moderate force.

After adjustment is satisfactory, tighten the idler pulley bolt, and then tighten the adjustment bolt.

Reconnect the negative battery cable.

When replacing more than 1 belt, it is a good idea to make note or mark what belt goes around what pulley; this will make installation easier if you mix up the belts.

Need to to how to change or tighten the belt

There is no tightening unless your Idler pulley spring is weak. There is constant pressure on the belt from this spring. In most cases the belts stretch and if you put on a new belt and still have problems; you will need the Idler pulley assembly.

You should see a label under the hood of your car. This will have the belt routing. There is a socket hole in the Idler pulley to reverse the spring tension and slide the old belt off. You use a rachet or breaker bar in the socket hole to move the Idler pulley. Then repeat the process and put the new belt on.

Nothing is adjustable. Belts are usually good for 40000 miles.

Belt replace

You will see pulleys on the engine. The pulley with nothing behind it is an idler pulley. All the other pulleys have a water pump, A/C pump, steering pump, and alternator.

The idler pulley puts tension on the belt. It has a fitting for a socket drive, either 3/8 or 1/2. You are to insert a rachet or socket extension in that square hole. When you push the pulley down it takes out the slack and you can slip the old belt off. Then you tread the new belt around and push the idler pulley until you get enough play to put on the new part.

How do replace the tensioner pulley on a 2.2 engine 4 cyl. 1998 chevy cavelier .

there are two bolts located behind the pully on the mounting bracket arm, (you have to use a 1/2 inch drive bar in the idler pully to move it so you can see the bolts) That will help you with locating the bolts, while you are moving the pully you might as well take the belt off to save time, After you remove the old idler pully install the new one, use your 1/2 drive bar on the pully to put your belt back on. Pretty simple job, good luck!

To replace a worn belt, locate the idler or generator pulley.

0900823d8004ed45.jpg

Loosen the hold-down fastener for the idler or generator pulley.

0900823d8004ed46.jpg

Pry the idler or generator pulley inward to release the belt tension and remove the belt.

0900823d8004ed47.jpg

Match the old belt up for size with the new replacement belt.

0900823d8004ed48.jpg

Observe the belt routing diagram in the engine compartment.

0900823d8004ed49.jpg

Install the new belt over each of the drive pulleys. Often the manufacturer recommends a sequence for feeding the belt around the pulleys.

Pry out the idler or generator pulley to put tension on the belt.
Pry out the idler or generator pulley to put tension on the belt.

0900823d8004ed74.jpg

Install the belt squarely in the grooves of each pulley.

0900823d8004ed75.jpg

Before adjusting belt tension, check for proper pulley alignment. This is especially critical with serpentine belts. Measure the belt deflection in its longest span. If a belt tension gauge is available, use it and compare the tension to specifications.
If a belt is too tight, wear to bearings for the water pump, alternator, and engine crankshaft can result.
Some late-model Chrysler engines require a torque reading to be taken when tension is applied to the generator drive belt. This is especially important on the longer, multiribbed V-belts.

0900823d8004ed76.jpg

Pry the idler or generator pulley to adjust the belt to specifications.

0900823d8004ed77.jpg

Tighten the idler or generator pulley fastener.

0900823d8004ed78.jpg

Start the engine and check the belt for proper operation.

Any more questions please ask. Good luck.
