You cannot its thats simple ,no dip stick ,you would need to drain and refill ,,,or with a cheap oil draining pump undo the plug in the sump then push the pipe up the middle and fill till it runs over the level outer part of the tube inside ,run engine then refill

96 taurus trans will not pull in drive at all, the next day it drives great. it was very cold the day it happened. what would cause that problem?

Could be a low fluid in the transmission. Check the level of the transmission fluid when the engie and transmission are at operating temperature. The engine must be running when you check the fluid level in the transmission.

I have a 1996 ford taurus. when i stop it does not go back into gear until i press on the gas. when it runs it runs fine

Check the transmission fluid level.

Do this by turning on vehicle, shift through all gears 2x, then leave in neutral.

Pull the transmission dipstick out, clean it off, insert transmission dipstick and pull out again.

The fluid should be in the crosshatched area.

If it is low you will need to add ATF fluid in the dipstick hole.

Light that looks like exclamation point in a circle located below tachometer flashing.

First off you need an owner's manual. You can get a free one here. http://pdfservicemanual.com/automotive/2001-ford-taurus-owners-manual The light that looks like a gear with an exclamation point inside indicates there is a problem with the transmission. May just be low of transmission fluid. To check the level dive the car until the transmission is warm, park on a level surface, place gear shift in park with engine running, and check transmission fluid level. Add only if necessary and do not overfill. If it is not low of fluid then seek professional help. The exclamation point in a circle under the fuel gauge next to the Brake light indicates you are low of brake fluid. Check the level of the brake fluid. If it is low you more than likely need to check your brake pads as they are worn out.

Transmission fluid

mercon 3 was the fluid specified by ford then they upgraded to mercon 5 either will work and you can mix if needed. to check fluid level you have to have car running and be at operating temp like when you get home from work would be best to check the stick for checking is yellow and under the hose from the air box to the engine down a little ways but visible
