Pull the console apart and locate the release for the shifter inside the console. After you release it and put the vehicle in park, you can remove the key.
Remove the center console viewing from the passenger side just under the shifter you will see the gear shift silenoid push in the button and now you can remove your key and shift into another gear
I assume you have owned this car for a while and now how to get into reverse. this problem may be due to worn shifter or bushings to linkage for ****** or shifter, and last may be an internal trans problem. you will need to do some checking . have some one help you as you move the shifter and look for play in the shifter arm or linkage, good day.
First i would check your brake switch it works a locking mechanism right along side your gear shifter which locks the gearshift in place. also look for a slot sometimes there is a slot made for you to slide your key into to release the shifter and allow you to move it manually. it will be on top somewhere by your shifter identification indicator PRND321 if the brake switch is good remove the PRD321 cover and look for the lock on the right hand side at the base of the shifter this may need replacing. thanks for using Fix Ya Please rate my solution that is how we get our points and achievements Thank You in advance.
The SHiFT lock is broken or not pulling up when u disengage the reverse and PARK!
SHiFT LOCK is the one in ur SHiFTiNG KNOB, when u try to release the PAR or going to reverse u have to pull/press it!
The only way you could release and check it, is by dismantling the whole shifting console, and check where it is disconnected or go to the nearest garage to fix on that!
Hope that helps u out!
your shifter linkage may need adjusting at the mounting point on the transmission. it may be off a little making the car's computer think you're still in reverse.
The correct procedure should be described in detail in your owner/operation manual.
For a 2004, 90 % sure that if it's a quadra trac you have to immobilize the vehicule, put your transmission shifter to neutral keeping foot on the brake obviously, engage the low on transfer case pulling the transfer case shifter, engage the transmission to drive
If it's a select track, normally you have to keep the vehicule moving very slowly (2 mph), move the transmission shifter to neutral, push the transfer case shifter to the right and pull it firmly. Once transfer case engaged, put back the transmission shifter to drive.
It could take few seconds to engage and disengage depending on the temperature and road condition. Do not try it on dry surface (preferable on mud, snow and wet surface). Drive at low speed because you will feel that it's very low geared.
By the way, follow the reverse process to reestablish normal mode
Push gear selector up past park and it should loosen up, or press hard on the brake pedal. Shifter up past park usually loosens it up. Common GM problem.
