Hi i have 1997 ford f 150 got a transmission from a junk yard and put it in and started to fill i have 10 quarts in it now and i have no fluid coming out transmission line yet win it is running what does that mean

Use Nissan Altima Automatic Transmission Fluid and it should hold about 10 quarts total. I would fill with 9 quarts and start the engine and circulate the fluid. Check the fluid level and add what you need.

1 quart probably won`t have much of a affect on the transmission as there is about 10-12 quarts in the transmission to start with.the only way to fix it is to do a transmission service and change all the fluid and the fluid in the torque converter it has a drain plug that you will have to find so you can drain it.

back on the passenger side firewall is a dipstick inserted into a tube- remove t dipstick, will need a long funnel to insert into the tube to fill the trans to the proper level.

Make sure you have a BIG pan,drop the trans pan (messy job, start at the front and go around, finally leaving a couple of bolts in front in so the back drops down and drains from there). pull the trans filter off the bottom of the trans-make sure the o-ring comes off with the filter. clean the magnet a the bottom of the pan, reinstall it and the filter after you use lint-free rags to clean the bottom of the trans (valve body). You can usually just reinstall the pan with the original gasket, it is far superior to the junk they give you when you buy a kit with a filter (about $30 for the kit) and gasket. Dont over tighten the bolts, work in a cris-cross pattern until they all snug, then go 1/4 turn. Install a long funnel into the dipstick tube and fill it with about 10-11 quarts of Mercon 5-start it up, and if necessary, you may end up adding 1 or 2 more quarts to get it to levle.

All depends on how much you took out - or how long the vehicle was sitting (allowing time for the torque converter to drain more fluid into the pan)

Typically, 4 quarts is about average for a filter change. Your transmission holds much more than that(up to 11 quarts), but the rest is in the torque Converter.

I would start with 3 quarts first - then start engine, and check your level. If you see nothing on the stick, turn the engine off right away - and put 2 more in. Same procedure.

Just remember to keep the vehicle on level ground when filling and checking the level with the vehicle running and in park.

Once it shows on the full line, cycle the transmission selector through all gears(no need to move the vehicle). Check your level again after that to ensure the proper level.

1. When refilling, remove dipstick to provide adequate venting and allow oil to flow into crankcase.
2. With ENG at operating temperature, shift through all gears. Check fluid level in PARK and add fluid as needed.
3. Fill to no more than 1/4 to 9/16" below fill plug hole.
4. Fill no higher than 9.5 mm or 3/8" below fill plug.

Put Five quarts of transmission fluid Mercon V in it. Start the engine and take it for a short drive so the transmission shifts through all the gears and then check the dipstick level. You may need to add a bit of a sixth quart, but you should be fine with five. When you check the level and get it to the right mark write how much it took on a piece of paper and keep it in the manual or the glove box.

You must remove the transmission pan to change the fluid, there is no drain plug.
