Your problem will be Solenoid and pressure related. Make sure you take it to a reliable trans repair shop. They will be able to tell you a lot more when they drop the pan. If the vehicle has over 150k and no dipstick be prepared for a complete overhaul. A NAPA AUTOCARE Facility can give you a very good warranty....2 year parts & labor free..

There is a posting on the above link about testing and adjusting the Thortle Position Sensor. I would give this a try. Sounds like the transmission does not like the throttle position. You have to moveaccelerator to get a shift.
It maybe torque converter ! I would go to transmission place and have them check it !
It sounds like tor transmission needs new solenoids. They usually go bad around 150K miles if the fluid has never been changed. It cost about$750.00 at the Ford dealer. I recommend you have the dealer do all transmission repairs as they specialize in them and have all the tools and equipment to do it the proper way.
Sounds like a clutch issue have clutch looked at

on the bottom of the transmission pan you will find a nut with a hex or torx in the middle you remove the center plug when the truck is hot and running on a level serface the trans fluod will dribble out if it does not dribble out it is low if it runs out fast a steedy streem it is over full now their is a part that screws into this for a fill if you remove the pan you will see how it works the pan has a pipe/ stack that when full of fluid the top of the pipe is at the full point if you remove the large nut the stack and plug will come out the best way to change the trans fluid is take it to some place that has a fluid exchange equment this will get all the fluid out including the torque converter

There IS a transmission drain plug on the 2002 Ford Explorer! It is, however, difficult to get the fluid back in as there IS NO dipstick (tube) to refill it. I installed the pan bolts far enough to hold the pan up (level) and then stuck a hose (attached to a funnel at top of engine compartment) through the opening between the pan and the bottom of the transmission. I was able to put five quarts in that way - no more as it will overflow (trust me). You can check other sites on how to check to see if that's enough and how to add more as needed. That's not simple either. Great idea Ford Motor Company (sarcasm) !!!!!!

I would have the transmission check if you plan on keeping the car a long time. The lucas oil is an additive for the oil. The additive is making the fluid a little heavier and tricking the soleniods or clutch and bands with a different pressures.
This is a temporary fix. The transmission over time is going to start to slip more and more.

DONT USE GEAR OIL IN A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. it will blow your seals out. the gear oil is too heavy and will block passages in the tranny
