Van starts and idles rough, but only if I hold brake pedal down. Soon as pedal is released ceases to run. Then sometimes won't start again with out giving it a bit of gas at the gas pedal 1996 Ford Windstar 3.8(Canadian model)

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

i think if you checked the sparking plugs and map sensors then check your distributer its maybe not delivering the current nedded to perform the spark to some of the cylinders

Check for a major vacuum leak, inspect from the air cleaner inlet tubes for cracks/leaks, and pay close atten. to the PCV hose/tube and fittings... sound like you have multi problems ...so fix this first and retest and check for what else is not working correctly ...hope this helps..GL

maybe your iac valve is not working? it takes place of a choke or temp sender to computer could be bad which controls t I.A.C. known as the idle control valve,do you have any codes?

Idle air control valve is the problem. "idle motor" tap it with a hammer it should temporarily solve your problem. it is right on top by the throttle body.
