I know this thread is old and crusty but as a professional technician I felt the need to update this thread for any new visitors...

Do NOT Idle these engines for any length of time over 15 minutes; Excessive idling builds up soot that eventually blocks up the whole system and those repairs are extremely expensive.

** No professional tech or shop will ever tell you how to or delete anything from a modern diesel because the fine and jail time are extreme. **

DO NOT BYPASS AN EGR VALVE. the computer commands this to open at certain times and some require feedback form the egr. then it will turn on the service engine soon light. egr valves are part of the emission system and stop valve rattle which can cause valve failure. just get a new one and do not try to clean it as it will not work hence stick.

Which sensor works the egr solenoid on a 1992 mitsubishi mighty max

Easy to find it. Trace the vacuum line from your egr valve along its path visually. At the end of the hose, should be the switch your trying to find.

Egr vacuum solenoid

Question?
The solenoid is usually turned on and off by the engine computer. When on-solenoid energized-vacuum signal will pass through solenoid and on to the egr valve. When solenoid is off, no vacuum will go to the egr valve. Solenoid can be tested: jumper battery voltage to it: air passage should not be blocked. With no voltage to it, air should not pass through.

I have a 2001 suzuki xl7, I replaced egr unit and installed new pvc valve. Still shows error code P0400. Why won't it pass deq?

You may have a EGR valve plugged exhaust gas passage, so when it is opened the systems computer doesn't see any change in the O2 signal voltage. To check this manually pull open the EGR valve, the engine should run very rough and will stall out most times, if you open the valve up and see no change in the engine idle the passages are plugged with carbon and must be cleaned. As long as you have this EGR problem the car will not pass smog.

Sorry I dont have a pic. for you. But here are instructions. The EGR valve is located at the top right of the engine next to the throttle body. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Except Linear EGR Valve

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the air cleaner assembly from the engine.
If equipped, unplug the valve electrical connection.
Remove the EGR valve vacuum tube from the valve.
Remove the EGR bolts and/or nuts and remove the EGR valve and gasket.
To install:
Install a new gasket to the EGR valve and install the EGR valve to the manifold.
Install the nuts and/or bolts. Tighten the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) and the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
Connect the vacuum tube to the EGR valve.
If equipped, attach the valve electrical connection.
Install the air cleaner and connect the negative battery cable.
Linear EGR Valve
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Note the position of the EGR valve prior to removal. Do not rotate the valve 180?.
Unplug the valve electrical connection..
Unfasten the valve retainers, then remove the valve and the gasket.

To install:
Clean all gasket residue from the gasket mating surfaces.
Install a new gasket and the valve.
Install the valve retainers.
On 1994-97 2.2L engines and 1994-95 4.3L engines, tighten the valve retainers to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). On 1998-99 2.2L models, tighten the retainers to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
On 1996-99 4.3L models, tighten the retainers on the first pass to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and on the final pass to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
Attach the valve electrical connections and connect the negative battery cable.

My Mazda CX7 2008 had the check engine light come on. I had it scanned and the code was P0401 and stated it was the ERG valve. Is there a recall on this problem or part?

We just had the same problem in Dec 2010. Purchased ours new Feb 2008. Mazda is aware of the issue. They will not fix it if it is out of warranty, but we have been going to the same dealer for service so they offered to pay for the part (EGR @ $450) if we payed for the labor @ $350. We had several problems with the vehicle, from the turbo failing to motor mounts failing to scraping brakes to rattles that would not go away. The problem is the turbo engine is not burning the fuel well enough so the carbon is coming back into the system past the EGR and clogging the system up. Not sure if it's an ethenol fuel related issue or octane issue. Too much unreliable technology. We sold ours the day after we fixed the EGR issue (w/ 50k miles). It was fixed and running fine, so we didn't feel guilty about passing it on. Just kept reading about needing to save for a new engine around 80k miles b/c of clogged engine valves. We went back to Honda...

Code on diagnostics p0401

Code on diagnostics p0401:

What is going on?
Exhaust Gas recirculation low flow detected means that: there is vacuum problem in the EGR system - between the combustion chamber, EGR valve (mechanical - blown up diaphragm or clogged airlets/hoses) , EGR Modulator Valve (mechanical - blown up diaphragm, dirty EG/air filter or clogged airlets/hoses) and Vacuum Switching Valve ((mechanical - blown up diaphragm or clogged airlets/hoses OR electrical - VSV not properly synchronizing with the ECM, for instance).

Effects?
This causes the combustion chamber temperature to increase and produce Oxides of Nitrate (NOx) that is out of an acceptable emission range. This triggers the Malfunction Light (check engine light) to stay on (after a couple of driving cycles)!
Solution: Focus on EGR airways (hoses...) and organs (EGR valve, EGR Modulator, VSV), clean, check or replace the defected one. VSV seems to be criticale as it plays electrical & mechanical function. Once the repair is done, Clear the P0401 code using an OBII scanner.
