In almost all cases you have an idler tension pulley which rides against belt between alternator and main pulley at crankshaft, so it will have to be first thing to loosen to release tension on belt to remove. There is a special tool for releasing tension while you tighten it to put new belt on. Take some pictures before you pull off belt for it can get confusing if you don't know what you are doing entirely. These belts take some dramatic looping.

You need to loosen the alternator so the belts become slack. Look for bolts on top and bottom that attach the alternator to a bracket or the engine block. Loosen them and the alternator will move. Since the belts hook to other accessories, you may need to loosen them too. To get them back and the proper tension, you'll need a large screwdriver or pry bar to put tension on them as you tighten the bolts. I suggest you get a Haynes guide for this model that will have photos showing how this is done.

SOURCE: power steering belt removal

You need to loosen the large mounting bolt at the base of the power steering pump as well as the tension adjusting bolt on top of the unit that is attached to the slotted arm. You may need to use of a large pry bar to gently force the pump inwards to gain enough slack to remove the belt.

There should be a tension pullie that you put a wrench on and turn it and the pullie will kind of fold back on a spring so you can remove the belt

SOURCE: How to loosen alternator tension on a 2003 Lancer

I have not seen this vehicle but, the center bolt or nut that holds the tensioner to the block is backed off two turns first.
Then the adustment bolt (most are accesed from under the vehicle) can be adjusted to give enough slack to install the new belt.
If this is still too tight, remove one of the two or two of the three bolts that mount the Alternator to allow for another 1/8" and install the belt.
Then remount the Alternator.
Then readjust the tension bolt.
Finish with the bolt or nut that mounts the tensionor to the block.
good luck.

Do you remove belt when removing alternator

Hi:

To remove the belt, you must loosen the belt tensioner pretty far.
It is located up near the front of the engine, not far from the air conditioning compressor. It has a 10mm bolt that must be loosened, and that will allow the belt to be removed. After the Alternator is replaced, tighten the belt back up, and start the car , shut it back down and adjust the belt as needed.

I want to change two belts (A/C and Alternator) on my 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage 1.5 car. What steps I am suppose to do.

First, feel the tightness of your belts. You will have to tighten the new belts to the proper tightness. If they are too tight, they will wear the bearings prematurely. If they are too loose, they will slip.

Suggest replacing all the belts also. 1st belt, remove coolant reservoir. Loosen the pulley next to the res. then there is a tension bolt behind it. get under the car, the alternator is right there on the passenger side. possible under a small shield. Loosen all the bolts on the alternator, then there is a tentioner on the alternator. Loosen that, remove belt, then take out the rest of the bolts, along with the plug and the ground wire to the alternator. for the P/S belt, loosen the other pulley 14mm, and then the tention bolt is another 12mm.

How to change the Compressor and Alternator belts? Corolla 1997

First, you will need a lot of money. A GM air conditioner compressor is very expensive.

I would only let a qualified mechanic make this replacement.

After all, the compressor costs about 800 to 1,000 dollars. i would only trust a mechanic to work on my cadillac
