I have a 97 oldsmobile achieva that is having issues starting. The dash lights only come on occasionally when key is on, when dashlights not on the car will start then stall after a couple seconds. If dashlights are on the car starts and runs fine. Sometimes if I leave the key on for a while the dashlights come on and it's good to go, but it seems like it's less and less.. I have notice that on the rear occasion that it does start without the dashlights coming on first, the security light is on. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

sounds like your passlock sensor on the ignition barrel is faulty. you will have to go to the dealer to have it replaced because of the programming after replacement.

SOURCE: 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva: Security light flashes upon startup

Here is what you do, but only when the SECURITY light flashes - if it is always ON or OFF it's no use.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes ( SECURITY light will flash for 10 minutes and then stay on SOLID)
Turn the key to OFF
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes.
Turn the key to OFF
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes.
Turn the ignition OFF.

Start the car normally.
It has relearnt the keycode and you're good to go.
NOTICE - it takes 30 minutes to relearn, that's THREE cycles of ON - 10 minutes - OFF.

Good luck.

SOURCE: 1996 Olds Achieva: Security light flashes upon startup

Several GM products, including the Chevrolet Impala and Malibu, the Oldsmobile Alero, the Pontiac Grand Prix, and Saturn Ion, have issues with the Security light coming on. This is many times an indication of a failing Body Control Module (BCM). Initially, the Security light will come on then go off, progressing to a constant on light, before the car will refuse to start. Other symptoms may include erratic action of electronics, a clicking sound coming from the glove box, and the air conditioning failing to blow cold air. I recommend a shop that specializes in the electronic systems of vehicles to diagnosis and make the necessary repairs. They should keep the car until they replicate the symptoms described. A new BCM from GM should cost about $230; plan on another $200 for them to diagnose the problem, replace the unit, and program the new unit. The dealers quote between $700 and $1,100 for the same repair. My experience and the experiences I have read on the internet, indicate the new BCM should last only about a year.

Car wont start without a jump all lights on dash are on it starts then dies right away on 97 olds achieva

Seems you may have more than one problem. A few questions you must answer first. If you have to jump it to start it,then your battery is dead are you have a draw draining the battery. Now if it dies right away look at your security light and see if it is on. Probably your security system is thinking someone stole the battery and shuts the fuel system down. Change the battery and Google the reset security system on 1997 Olds Achieva and you probably be set to go

Achieva 97 starts but dies right after. All warning lights on the dash board are on. Could someone help?

This sounds like an anti theft security issue to me. If you see a light on the dash that says security, check out this link. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

Where is a good place to get step by step instructions on how to replace an ignition switch in an 97 oldsmobile achieva, with photos and is free.............

The service manual. But you could search the Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Bonneville forums for info.
I did a 1997 Malibu and after removing the appropriate dash covers, you had to pull the instrument panel, which just pops out. Then you got to the switch through the opening.

Where is the radio fuse in a 1995 OLDS ACHIEVA?

In the underside of the dash, under the steering wheel (a bit left of where the column meets the dash). It should have a label saying "FUSES". You press it, than pull it open.

Radio Installation for a 96 Oldsmobile Achieva

I just replaced my radio on my 97 olds so im thinking it should be the same. You have to completely remove the lower dash. this involves popping many of those lock things but be careful cause they break easy. Also you will need to remove multiple screws from around the lower dash, then it will just drop down and you can remove the radio.
