Unfortunately it sounds like you have some internal transmission damage. When reverse wont function in your vehicle, it is fairly common that the reverse clutch plate in the transmission ha sworn the teeth off the gear. Once you have the transmission fixed, make sure you come to a complete stop when backing up before going forward. That is usually the action that will cause the theeth to wear off the clutch plate

I can't recall whether or not that model comes with a manual transmission or not. If it is an automatic, then you might be able to have the problem fixed. There are many sensors on a transmission, and it could be as simple as one of them malfuntioning. There could be dirt or grit clogging one of the hydrolic tunnels in the transmission that allows it to shift into reveres; this problem could possibly be fixed by having your transmission flushed. It could also be that either a band or clutch is worn out and no longer functioning properly, and if that is the case then you would have to have your transmission rebuilt. Usually worn out bands or clutches will turn the transmission fluid brown, though that can not be completely relied on as an indicator. So to start with I would have the transmission flushed and refilled. Next have a diagnostic run on the computer. After that have a transmission place look at it.

DIsconnext and reconnect the linkage at the transmission. You may want top replace the linkage cable all together. Make sure you set the parking break and block the tires

I know this sounds stupid but will it back up if you put it in 4wd low? If yes its a transfer case problem. If no, they the transmission will need rebuilt. Also can you push the vehicle forward or backward in park?
