If the vehicle engine got overheated it is possible the head of the engine is cracked, or the intercooler is leaking, depending on the colour of the smoke low fuel pump pressure,
hope this helps.

Hi
The only sensible way forward is to get a list of fault codes from the onboard diagnostic system and take it from there. You could either go to a VW dealer, or if you are technically minded you could buy a £15 interface cable, download some free "VAG diagnostic software" and run it on a portable computer.
There are lots of possible reasons for the problem and guessing will not really help. If these suggestions turn out to be sound, please give my reply a "Fixya!"rating, If they do not, please hold off rating and add a comment with more details so I can try to help you further. Cheers, D

Check the oil fill cap and the radiator cap, see if you have a milky scum accumulation on either one, can indicate a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder where the oil is burning and allowing water intothe hot cylinder which causes white smoke to be emmitted from tailpipe.

2002 VW 1.9tdi engine lacks power and emits black exhaust smoke. What is likely cause?

If it isn't a dirty, blocked air filter, the EGR is always a firm suspect (Exhaust Gas Recycler). The EGR recycles a limited amount of exhaust gases and can become quite gummed up with soot and oil.

The Saab 2.2 tid suffers from this big style. Cleaning - takes about 30-45 minutes - usually solves the problem.

I wouldn't imagine that cleaning your VW EGR will take long or be too difficult. Have a look on the following link:

2000 TDI - Lots of white smoke at cold start. Engine misses badly at midrange and at cruising conditions. Good power when peddle is mashed and seems to run smooth then. White smoke mostly goes away at idle...

Sounds like your injection pump timing is off, an injector is leaking or a bad seal on your IP.
VW dealers have a horrible reputation when it comes to TDI's. Check out the posts over at www.tdiclub.com Those guys are very knowledgeable - and the first thing they'll tell you is don't take it to a dealer.
You can probably find someone in your area that has a copy of Vag-Com (scantool software that vw uses) software that could look at your timing. It definitely sounds like your dealer was throwing parts at your car because they didn't know what your problem is. If I were you, I'd copy and paste your post from here over at www.tdiclub.com
